Chapter 140 - Threads of Command

The morning light was pale, stretching through the tall windows of the castle, brushing the stone with a cold silver glow. I moved through the halls with quiet certainty, each step measured, deliberate. The crown rested lightly on my head now, no longer a burden but a tether to the pulse beneath my feet, the heartbeat of the city threading through me.

The silver threads responded instantly as I extended a hand. They curled along the marble floor, weaving through cracks, over rugs, and up staircases, obeying without hesitation. I tested them, nudging the flow toward a single corridor. The doors aligned slightly, subtle creaks accompanying the movement, as though the castle itself was bending to my will.

The system stirred faintly inside my mind. Still unnamed, still hidden, it whispered not in words but in sensation—a brush of thought, a pull of intuition. I could feel it observing, weighing, learning from my choices. Its presence was foreign yet familiar, a shadow threading alongside my own pulse.

I paused at a balcony overlooking the city square. Silver water in the streets shimmered faintly in response to my gaze, curling toward me like a living tide. A few scattered figures moved below—residents returning, hesitant, curious. I let the threads nudge small debris aside, smoothing the path for them, testing the reach of my influence without revealing myself fully.

The system's faint approval—or something like it—echoed through my thoughts. I didn't fully understand it yet, but I felt the promise: guidance, protection, and perhaps more. Power that existed beyond the crown, beyond the city's pulse.

I flexed my fingers. The threads of water rose higher, forming delicate spirals around my hands, casting reflections across the stone walls. Each movement was precise, each motion deliberate, a small demonstration of command.

A whisper of doubt lingered. Could I control this fully? Could I bend the city and the system together without losing myself? The thought flickered and died. I would learn. I had no choice.

The first orders had been given. The first tests completed. And as I stepped back into the main hall, the castle hummed faintly in response. It was waiting for me to claim more.

And I would.

The heir had begun her rule.
