Veronica's POV
Reina's complexion drained of color. She'd strutted in here thinking she could make me squirm, but instead walked straight into her own mess.
They didn't actually need all those pieces, but backing down now would make them look like complete fools in front of me.
I could see Reina's frustration, but she plastered on that fake confidence. Chin up, she declared, "Two million is nothing. Just run the card!"
The reality check hit fast. After swiping, the sales assistant looked at Reina apologetically. "I'm sorry, ma'am, but your card has been declined. Do you have another one?"
"Declined?"
Reina went rigid, her face draining white. That was her only card, the one meant for buying Cecile from The Nelson Family a gift. Now what?
She turned to her daughter desperately. "Ashley, use yours."
Ashley clearly didn't want to fork over her own money, but with no other option and her pride on the line in front of me, she reluctantly handed over her card.
