Chapter 79: The Crown's Secret
"I'm starting to think that the whole purpose of this tomb may have been to keep this guy inside," Harry said.
The golden skeleton rose from its throne and looked down at Harry. A pair of flames appeared inside his eye sockets.
"I have to agree on that one, but do I wonder what he did when he was alive to deserve having his corpse sealed in this tomb?" V said.
"Should we try talking to him?" Harry wondered.
"I doubt he can answer without a tongue. But if you were planning on asking him for the crown, I believe the answer was going to be a resounding no," V said.
The massive golden skeleton let out a loud roar. The flames in his eyes burned with more intensity.
"He can roar, at least," Harry pointed out.
"It doesn't look like he is very happy to receive a visit," V added.
"If he were a nice guy, they wouldn't have locked him in h—" Harry made a swift move backwards.
A moment later, a large bony hand smashed the ground where he had been before.
Harry moved his index finger and pointed it at his rib cage. "Reducto."
The destructive charm managed to hit its target. The undead's body was shaken by the impact, but with no visible damage to its bones.
"Of course… resistant to magic." Harry had already been able to tell at first glance that those golden bones were far from normal.
This sorcerer must have performed countless rituals to enhance his body when he was still alive. That would explain his unnatural size and the color of his bones.
The crown resting on top of his head was also far from normal, and it emitted an extremely dark aura that could only be compared to that of a Horcrux.
"Is that crown what I think it is?" Harry asked.
"So you finally realize, huh?" Given his unique circumstances, V was able to see it immediately.
"Indeed, it is what you think it is. Egyptian magic users were obsessed with living forever. They were the first ones to study the complexities of the human soul and developed the first soul container. But they called it… a phylactery."
"This makes this task more complicated." Harry avoided another attack. "His weak point is the only thing I cannot break."
"Just rip the crown off his head and use a portal to escape," V suggested.
"Are you crazy?! If I do that, the undead will not be destroyed and could escape to the surface." After all, he had already taken care of destroying most of the traps left in the tomb.
"So? It will be someone else's problem. I'm sure they have a Magic Ministry somewhere in this country," V said.
Harry frowned. "I thought you knew me better than that, my friend. I would never leave innocent people to die if there is something I can do about it." He made a line with his fingers. "Divulsa!"
As long as he could dismantle the body beyond repair, it would not matter if his soul was still intact.
"Ahhh!" Amenhotep placed his palm in front of him and produced a semi-translucent shield.
Harry's curse didn't manage to get past the magical protection, and the purple substance left behind was quickly pushed aside.
"Oh… that was impressive." V knew how hard it was to block the curse that Harry had used. That shield must have been far from normal. "I suppose we forgot we were dealing with a legendary sorcerer."
"I didn't forget. I just didn't think he could still use his magic in his current state," Harry responded.
Amenhotep went on the offensive now. "Rahhh!" He roared and produced a ball of green fire, which he then threw at Harry.
"Clypeus Fulgens! (Lightning Shield)" Harry created a shining barrier and dashed backwards.
He extended his arms to his sides. The brands on his arms shone brightly as he channeled massive amounts of magic through them.
As he expected, the lightning from his shield and the green fire from the undead sorcerer created a violent reaction of fire and electricity.
Harry quickly brought his hands together. "Magna Impulsa! (Great Thrust)"
The force of his spell drove all the fire and lightning towards Amenhotep.
"Oi, be careful. What if you end up destroying the crown?" V warned him.
"A phylactery should be able to withstand this much. Besides…" Harry pointed ahead.
Amenhotep had produced another shield to protect himself and moved out of the way before this one collapsed under the violent forces, which ended up leaving a large hole in the walls of the chamber.
"This is far from over," he added.
"You sound excited…" V would have raised an eyebrow if he still had them.
"It's not every day that I get the chance to put everything I have learned into practice."
"Okay, oh Great Merlin… but don't forget we are still underground. Don't get too carried away, or this may become our tomb instead," V said.
Amenhotep roared while a suspicious grey smoke started to come out of his mouth.
"I believe that's—"
"Serpensortia." Harry conjured a large green snake between himself and the undead.
When the smoke reached the snake, it was turned into stone.
"Petrifying curse… never seen it being used like this," V said.
"That's because no living person would be able to use it that way without becoming a statue." Harry levitated into the air. He made a wave motion with his hand. "Purgatio!"
The air-cleansing charm washed away most of the smoke, but some remnants were still close to the ground.
Harry hovered above Amenhotep and pointed the palm of his hand down.
"Furor Ignis!" A burst of golden flames descended from the air.
