Chapter 1 - Threads Uncut

I saw it, or I thought I did... A way to cut these strings and free myself from my memories, but before I could reach for it, I woke up.

Of course, it was nothing less than a dream. To have a coherent thought is but a blessing, and yet, I can't do it like they can. I wonder, if I stripped away all I had, would I truly be happier?

With these thoughts in mind, I tried to get out of my bed, but instead, I found myself falling down and dragging a chair along with me... A wooden chair? I don't have any chair like this in my bedroom, though... Where did I fall asle-... Huh?

I look up and notice some unfamiliar faces looking at me from multiple school desks, that's when I realized that this was not my home, rather, a school? One thing is for sure, this isn't MY school. I don't know who these people, but one of them soon calls me by name.

"Alum, were you sleeping in class again? This is the third time this week, you should get more sleep," a teacher I'd never seen reprimanded me.

I scratched my head and ended up almost sinking my nails in, they were longer than they used to be. I stood up and looked around while ignoring my classmates' laughter, I'd become taller.

It didn't matter how long I thought about it, this just had to be some sort of sick joke, a nightmare or alike. Yet, the more this facade went on, the more real it felt.

"Teacher, I think there's something seriously wrong with me, I need to go see a doctor as soon as possible," I finally replied. The rest of the class kept on acting as per usual, thinking it might be a way to get out of class as soon as possible, some remained quiet.

When I looked at those who had laughed, my expression had become pale, I felt like I should know them, but they looked like strangers to me. Suddenly, someone put a hand on my right shoulder and I just...

"Hey, are you ok-"

SHOVE

"I don't know who the fuck you are, don't touch me." I yelled at the guy with brown hair and distanced myself from him. I admit my thoughts were quite absurd, but they certainly fit the situation I found myself in.

At that moment, I was about to get dragged out of class by the teacher, only for a weird rumble to come from underneath the building. When I looked outside of the window, I saw something, it moved through the sand of the desert surrounding the school.

Having no time to even realize where I even was, I used that opportunity to get out of the class and fleet downstairs out of reflex.

"ALUM!!!" The teacher screamed when she noticed, but it wasn't like I could hear her properly when the entire class was screaming in fear.

This wasn't good, this wasn't good at all... I had the feeling things were about to get worse, and they certainly did! The closer I went to the entrance of the school, the more I could feel my bones tremble due to the impending earthquake.

My body grew swifter, stronger, I started to grapple the spindle and rail of the stairs to descend even more rapidly, and after many floors, I felt my heartbeat grew quicker... An eye stared at me from the entrance, and it came from within the maw of a massive worm with drill-like teeth stretching wide enough to devour the building.

I grit my teeth and kicked a window at my right, escaping through it and running into the desert to redirect its attention. My head hurts... What is going on? I can feel a sharp pain in my leg, I look at it and as it turned out, shards of glass pierced right into my flesh, blood came pouring out in a worrying amount, but it was fine, I felt like I could get out of this situation... But how?

My head was a mess of foggy memories and sensations, everything felt so unreal and yet it felt like I should just... Let the fog take me.

CRACK

Something came over me, and I heard one of my bones snap as I pulled the shard out. Weirdly enough, the bleeding stopped, a black reflective stone covered the wound. From underneath me, I could feel the sand trembling and the worm's disgusting face appearing as I was thrown in the air.

The wind blew around me, and I grasped it. The glass shard I had removed pierced my hand too, and that rocky material expanded from my hand to its sharp edge. My dark hair followed the wind, and then did my body, I managed to turn around and rest my foot right on one of the worm's tooth, my leg cracked from the impact, but I could still move it, that material was allowing me to move.

With unexpected agility, I snapped back to my senses and ran on the worm's teeth and mouth, only to jump and speed onto its back.

Sand hit my eyes, so I closed them. The wind was pushing against me, so I pushed back. And despite all of this, I fell.

No, I pierced the worm's skin with the black glass dagger and followed its long, snake-like body as if it were a trail, it had scales that I had managed to pierce through and detach from its body. I am not sure how I'm managing to hold onto my dagger, yet my hand grips it with ease... I've never felt so alive.

And as soon as I was somewhat stable, the worm's body undulated at such speed that I was thrown into the scorching desert's sky.

Hah... My head's spinning again, it hit me so hard...

I glance at it as I'm about to die from the fall, but it had decided that such an ending was going to hurt its pride, so it charged at me after jumping and almost bit my arm off, but before it could, I threw the shard of glass into the eye between its fangs, I had blinded it.

I closed my eyes as I prepared to fall to my death, but instead, I could feel that the weird material had stretched in a spear-like shape from my hand to its eyes, and it was still in its mouth. I climbed up on and let go of what I was subconsciously holding onto.

I had torn the black shirt I was wearing to shreads with my inhuman movements, and I was still not safe as it was likely this beast would try and attack me once again, so there was no time for me to think.

Instead, I jumped from that polearm-lookalike to the back of its head and with the shard of glass I kept, pierced and slowly slid down its back until I reached the ground.

My face body was covered in blood and I was unable to hold on any longer, my wounds reopened and I was soon on the brink of death. What was that weird substance that came from my blood and how was I, a mere human, able to fight a creature larger than a school?
