Chapter 54 - War Machine and the Attack

Boom!

The front gate was blown open by an RPG. The security guard was badly wounded and rolled across the ground, and the mercenaries in the other vehicles jumped out one after another, streaming inside as they stormed Blade Technology Industries.

Black Widow jolted when she heard the explosion. This was Washington, D.C., and in the city center at that. They were this brazen?

Zod pulled up the surveillance feed. Watching the attackers, fully armed and holding automatic rifles, he narrowed his eyes slightly.

I thought they'd send a package with a bomb inside. And this is what I get?

Black Widow hurriedly reported to her superior, the one-eyed bald black guy. He clearly hadn't expected these mercenaries to be this deranged and bold. Were they really willing to throw their lives away for money?

"Natasha, protect Zod Heath. His company has fifty War Machines on standby, enough to hold until the police and military arrive. I'll contact the nearby National Guard," he said immediately.

Whether or not Zod Heath had kidnapped or killed Tony Stark, the moment he cracked AIDS and produced a miracle drug, he gained an additional layer of protection. Many powerful people did not want Zod Heath dead, because they saw hope in him.

A genius that transcended the century might even unlock the secret of human aging, or cures for cancer and other terminal illnesses. Simply put, his potential value was beyond imagination. Anyone who dared touch him would be going against the interests of all humanity.

After receiving the notice, the military moved quickly. To save time, they deployed helicopters. The show of force was massive. War Machines that Zod Heath had traded to the U.S. also arrived. Aside from those out on missions, the rest came rushing in.

"Move, now!"

Beast Soldiers from the security department suited up in War Machines. The first wave of mercenaries was turned into swiss cheese.

The War Machines inside Blade Technology Industries were basically War Machine Version 2. A rotary machine gun sat on the right shoulder, and the assist system automatically locked targets, firing rounds capable of punching through 20 mm20 mm standard steel plate. On the back was a thickened ammo pack. On the left shoulder was a missile bay filled with silver-painted warheads. These missiles used a new chemical compound. A missile the size of a finger could shred a tank, and the chemical flame reaction produced extreme heat in a very short time, hot enough to melt titanium alloy.

Two chest plates on the torso opened, revealing gold-painted warheads inside. These gold missiles were even stronger, demolition missiles specialized for structures.

With that savage firepower, the War Machines quickly suppressed the mercenaries.

Bang!

A sudden thunderous crack echoed down the corridor. One War Machine's head exploded, and the impact toppled its heavy body backward.

A mercenary holding an anti-materiel sniper rifle sneered. War Machines were strong and ignored most weapons, but this was an explosive armor-piercing round. Paired with an anti-materiel rifle, it was basically one shot, one kill.

Then his face froze.

The War Machine that had fallen stood back up, and its left shoulder missile bay rose. The hatch opened, and a silver missile howled out.

"Fuck!"

The mercenary hugged his sniper rifle and rolled on the spot. But the missile didn't slam into the wall like he expected. It curved gracefully and hit him, already target-locked.

Boom!

After the blast, there wasn't even ash left to find.

The Beast Soldier cursed under his breath. Good thing the company's War Machines had a secondary kryptonite coating, otherwise that shot would've blown his head clean off.

Normal War Machines used steel alloy armor. But Zod treated his company's War Machines differently. Their surfaces all had a secondary kryptonite coating, giving them absurd defense. Even taking an explosive armor-piercing round from a Barrett only left a 10 mm10 mm dent.

Getting hit elsewhere didn't bother a Beast Soldier, but the head was different. The head was a Beast Soldier's weakness. That was why he vented his anger by firing that silver missile.

By now, U.S. helicopters and War Machines had arrived. They pushed inside, but mercenaries guarding the entrance opened fire and dropped several soldiers. The War Machines moved to the front, and the troops sheltered behind them, popping out occasionally to return fire.

The War Machines had it easier. They raised the big killer weapon issued by the military, the Browning 12.7 mm12.7 mm M2HB heavy machine gun. This was a vehicle-mounted gun.

Thud thud thud thud!

Deafening continuous blasts. More than ten War Machines fired and advanced at the same time. Blade Technology Industries' building materials were solid. Even M2HB fire didn't leave much of a mark. Otherwise, their cover would've been shredded and everyone behind it killed.

Boom!

A huge bang. One War Machine's head was blown open with a massive hole, and it collapsed to the ground.

"Fall back! They've got armor-piercing rounds!"

The War Machines were startled and immediately scattered. Luckily, they weren't clunky machines. On the contrary, with enough power, War Machines were more agile than humans, and faster on a sprint too.

After repeated deployments, War Machines' weaknesses had been figured out. Ordinary large-caliber guns couldn't do much to that steel alloy body, but humans were best at slaughtering their own kind. There were plenty of armored units stronger than War Machines, so methods to deal with them appeared quickly. Using armor-piercing rounds was the most common. Explosive armor-piercing rounds were used most often, and some insane people even used depleted uranium rounds.

With their lives threatened, the War Machines turned even more vicious. They grabbed a weapons crate from logistics. Inside were custom rocket launchers.

A mercenary chewed gum, seeing no movement outside for a long time. War Machines, so what? In a narrow space like this, just setting up a sniper rifle was enough to keep them from showing their heads.

Then, suddenly, there was movement outside.

One War Machine quickly leaned out. The object in its hands made the mercenary's pupils shrink. He tried to shoot and stop it, but the War Machine was faster. It pulled the trigger and fired two rockets.

With laser guidance assistance, the War Machine didn't need to worry about missing. And these rockets also had an expanded blast radius.

The mercenary didn't even bother grabbing his gun. He jumped up and ran. He barely took a few steps before an explosion detonated behind him. The shockwave launched him into the air, pulverized his organs, and killed him mid-flight. The rolling heat and flames only served to finish the corpse.

From inside the office, Black Widow watched the surveillance feed Zod had pulled up and gained a full understanding of Blade Technology Industries' armed strength.

What she didn't know was that Zod's automated mechanical soldiers still hadn't even been deployed.
