I dreaded this.
I was feeling that this would come.
A condition that would create problems. Something that would come between my brother and life.
And here it was. A test.
"What kind of test?" I asked, my voice heavy with tension
The devil chuckled, "Why are you being so serious? It's easy, actually. I just want to see whether you are the right man to invest in."
I heaved a sigh, "So...what exactly do I need to do?" Considering, the type of job he was offering me, I could already sense the test he would suggest.
And as I thought, "You need to manipulate a woman into leaving her boyfriend's birthday party to come over and be with you."
I frowned, "Who?"
Devin's face split into a grin as he muttered, "Your ex-girlfriend, Mira."
I froze at my spot...come to think about it, her new boyfriend, Troy, it was his birthday today.
I stared at the devil, "So...if I make her come to me, you will offer me the contract?"
The devil nodded, "Yes, but only she has to know about the fact that she is leaving the party to meet you. So don't plan on making some lies to ignite her humanity."
And here comes the condition...I was thinking of telling her to come and check on Dennis. Yes, I know that it was bad to use my brother as an excuse, but I am doing all this for his sake.
But now ..can I do it? If someone asked her why she is leaving, she wouldn't hesitate to share the reason. And if I tell her not to tell anyone about it, she will find me suspicious and won't come over.
This has turned complicated.
"Ding-Ding, you only have an hour and the venue of the party is half an hour away, so hurry up, boy." I gritted my teeth.
He is enjoying it now.
Scoffing, I got up from the stool.
"I will be back in an hour," I informed a nurse before heading out.
Somehow, this all still feels impossible yet I have to do this since I no longer have any hope.
....
*Ptah*
The cork of the champagne went flying as Troy opened another bottle, "Woo~hoo! Who wants another glass?" He was pouring it while standing on the table, and his sidekicks were offering their glasses like little peasants.
The small group of girls was sitting at the side, chatting.
Among them was a beautiful girl with wavy, long, golden hair and a pair of blue eyes who also held a glass of fruit juice and was chatting with the other girls whom she barely knew.
"By the way, Mira," one of the girls whose name the blue-haired remembered to be Ness, asked, "I heard you recently broke off with that guy...Nathan was his name? I heard you two were together for two years?"
The others turned silent, their focus on Mira now. Naturally, they would be curious to know the story.
After all, in their eyes, Mira was no different than them; being with their man because they have something in common.
Money.
Mira wryly smiled, "Ah, yes ...we broke up four months ago."
"Hmm~what was the reason? Did he cheat on you?" Another girl asked, clearly curious.
Mira sighed, "No, he didn't...he just didn't have time for me and...every time we were together, it didn't feel like he was there."
Many rolled their eyes at the boring response while Ness asked, "Hmm~you moved on quickly...Though, I understand since Troy has been chasing you for quite some time now."
Mira gave a sheepish smile, "Yes...he has been pursuing me for six months now, so I decided to give him a chance-"
Just then, her phone buzzed.
She blinked and then froze when she saw the name flashing on her screen.
[Nathan]
Her mind turned blank for a moment but before the closest girl could have seen who it was, Mira hurriedly got up and said, "From my mother...I need to take this."
Ness glanced at one of her friends as she said, "Sure~sure."
Mira walked a little far away from them, a little near the corner.
She bit her lip...why is he calling now?
Even though they broke up, they never blocked each other's numbers or on social media. Why? Well, he never contacted her on his own initiative and he was inactive on social media.
She never expected him to approach her so suddenly after all, he was the type of guy who never looked back at those whom he had left behind.
Then why...why today?
For a moment, she thought of just ignoring the call...and pretending this never happened.
But this is Nathan...he wouldn't have called unless it was an emergency.
She glanced at Troy who was currently flirting with a waitress before she finally took a deep breath and received the call,
"What do you need?" She asked, her voice stern.
There was a brief pause before she heard a voice she could recognise even from a crowd.
[Hey...do you remember the first question you asked after our first time?]
Mira froze...not only because he was suddenly talking about their first time but also because she remembered that question vividly.
Something she couldn't discern to this day.
And he made her remember that.
[If you want to hear my answer come to the place I have texted you. I will be waiting for you.]
