CHAPTER 30: THE HALLOWEEN DANCE INCIDENT

October's Halloween dance approaches with administration warnings.
Any fighting means expulsion. Police involvement. Permanent records destroyed.
Everyone promises good behavior while privately preparing for confrontation.
The gym is decorated. Cheap Halloween decorations trying to be festive. Music too loud. Teenagers in costumes ranging from creative to last-minute.
Sam is a literary character. Jane Eyre. I'm Rochester. The irony not lost on either of us.
"At least our relationship has better communication," she says.
"Low bar."
She laughs. We dance. For thirty minutes, everything feels normal.
Then I see Sam and Robby by the punch bowl. Talking. Innocent conversation between friends about Daniel's training methods.
But from across the gym, it looks intimate. Close. Suspicious.
Tory sees it. Rage immediate. Visible.
Miguel sees it. Face darkening.
"No. No no no. This is how it starts."
I move toward them. Trying to intercept. Too slow.
Tory's already there. Voice loud. Accusatory.
"Can't even stay loyal to your boyfriend? Need to collect all the guys?"
Sam's bewildered. "What? I'm just talking to—"
"I see how you look at him. How you look at everyone. Rich girl who can't help but take what she wants."
Crowd gathering. Phones out. Smelling drama.
I reach them. Position between. "Tory, this is a misunderstanding. They're just talking."
"Stay out of this."
Robby steps back. Hands up. "I'm not trying to start anything."
Miguel arrives. Drunk. Someone spiked the punch. "You moving in on her, Keene?"
"Miguel, you're drunk. Let's get some air."
But Hawk appears. Also drunk. Shoving Demetri who was passing by.
"Watch where you're going, traitor."
Demetri stumbles. "I'm not doing this, Eli."
"Don't call me that!"
The first punch throws. Hawk to Demetri. Contact. Blood.
The dance erupts.
Cobra Kai vs. Miyagi-Do vs. random students caught in crossfire.
Exactly the scenario administration feared.
I go into overdrive. Moving through chaos. Using training not to hurt but to restrain.
Catch Hawk mid-swing at Demetri. Lock him in hold from behind.
"This isn't worth it! Eli, stop!"
He struggles. Strong. Angry. But I hold on.
"Let me go!"
"When you calm down!"
Across the gym, Tory lunging for Sam. I release Hawk. Sprint.
Position between them. Arms spread.
"You want to hit someone, hit me. But you're not touching her."
Tory's face twisted with rage. "Move."
"No."
She feints left. Goes right. Fast. Well-trained.
I intercept. Block her path. Don't strike. Just defend. Redirect.
"Tory, stop! This isn't who you are!"
"You don't know who I am!"
Teachers flooding in. Security. Whistle blowing.
But momentum carries. Students fighting. Chaos spreading.
I shout. Loud. Commanding.
"STOP! All of you!"
A few pause. Not enough.
Different approach. Appeal to something deeper.
"Kreese wanted this! He wanted us destroying each other! And we're giving him exactly what he wanted even though he's gone!"
That truth penetrates. Students hesitating. Looking around. Seeing the chaos.
Seeing themselves.
Hawk releases Demetri. Steps back.
Miguel stops. Confusion clearing.
Tory lowers her fists. Breathing hard.
The violence de-escalates. Not completely. But enough.
Police arrive. Red and blue lights through gym windows.
Students scatter. Teachers attempting containment.
I'm left standing between Sam and Tory. Both bleeding from minor cuts. Both shaken.
"Everyone okay?"
Sam nods. Tory glares but doesn't attack.
[CRISIS RESPONSE: PARTIALLY SUCCESSFUL]
[Violence occurred but limited]
[Casualties: Minor injuries only]
[Tragedy: Prevented]

Principal's office. Monday morning. Johnny and Daniel both called in.
Administration threatening. Serious consequences. Mandatory mediation.
I sit exhausted. Frustrated.
Principal Martinez addresses both senseis. "Your rivalry is destroying our school. These kids worship you. And they're tearing each other apart because of it."
Johnny and Daniel exchange looks. Guilt. Shame. Recognition.
"We'll handle it," Johnny says.
"You said that last time. This is your final warning. Next incident, we ban all karate students from school activities."
After, in the parking lot, I find Sam.
"I can't keep preventing this. Eventually, something will happen I can't stop."
She takes my hand. "Then maybe it's time to stop trying to save everyone. Take care of yourself first."
"But I know what's coming. The school fight. Miguel falling. I have to prevent it."
"I can't. Not yet."
[MAJOR INCIDENT PREVENTION RATE: DECLINING]
[ESTIMATED TIME TO CATASTROPHIC EVENT: 4-6 weeks]
[UNLESS SYSTEMIC CHANGES OCCUR]
That night, alone, I assess the situation.
I've prevented the Halloween dance from becoming massacre. But the underlying tensions remain.
Tory hates Sam. The dojos are at war. Students are choosing sides.
And somewhere in the timeline I remember, a school fight erupts. Miguel falls. Everything changes.
I have four to six weeks to prevent it.
Or prepare to survive it.
The weight of foreknowledge crushes down.
"How do you save everyone when the systems are designed to fail?"
The System offers no answer.
Just probabilities. Countdowns. Warnings.
I dismiss them all and plan for tomorrow's battles.
Because that's all I can do.
Fight. Endure. Hope.
One day at a time.
