Chapter 52 - Chapter 52 Wolves and Gold

Under the banner of the Golden Company, the Knights of the Golden Company charged into battle, but they attacked Bloodbeard's Cat's Company and the Free Mercenaries led by the Myr men from behind. The Elephant of the Golden Company, in particular, played an even greater role.

Bloodbeard's and the Myr men's offensive collapsed, and the Free Mercenaries fled in desperation. The Spear Company and the Second Sons all surrendered to the Wolf Pack Company, launching an attack on the Cat's Company and the Myr men.

On a small hill, the high-ranking Commanders of the Golden Company gathered, looking out at the changing battlefield, where the appearance of the Golden Company completely buried the Cat's Company.

Each Longspear around them was topped with a gilded skull. One skull was particularly large and strangely shaped, while the head beneath it was only the size of a Child's fist: the ferocious Maelys and his unknown brother. The other skulls didn't have many distinguishing features, except that some had fractured skulls from being bludgeoned to death by a hammer in life, and another had neat, sharp teeth.

"They won beautifully! The elite of the Wolf Pack Company are very strong, they have that Northern feel. I didn't expect the escaped slaves to be so well-trained by them," said Ghorlys Edoryen, the treasurer of the Golden Company and a Volantene.

Lansono Marr, the Lysene intelligence officer, then added, "Although Bloodbeard is crude and bloodthirsty, he is not useless. This kid has some tricks up his sleeve in battle; his harassment, encirclement, and use of cavalry are all very clever. Even if we didn't help, Bloodbeard would have been hard-pressed to escape death. He has the ability to cooperate with us..."

"Your ideas are too risky!" Homeless Harry, the Commander-in-Chief of the Golden Company, sighed. He was the leader of the Golden Company, but he was afraid of war. Homeless Harry didn't look like a warrior; he was stout, with a large round head, light gray eyes, and sparse hair combed over to hide his baldness. "When the liberator's enemies, the slavers and governors, swarm in from all directions, what good can a mere few slaves do?"

"We have no choice, Harry! The butter merchants and cheese mongers of the Free Cities can give us gold, but they won't offer any other help!" Franklin Flowers suggested.

"Helping the Wolf Pack means offending all our major clients! If the liberator and the Wolf Pack Company's game of freeing slaves fails, then he'll be ruined before we even reach Westeros," Harry said with a look of frustration.

"According to the plan!" Harry cleared his throat.

"What plan? Your plan, or the fat man's plan? We're tired of wandering. Maelys Blackfyre could cross the Narrow Sea with the help of other copper kings, and so can we. The Wolf Pack's fighting strength is good, and these slaves are an endless supply of troops. Once the liberator takes the Disputed Lands and Myr, he can also help us cross the Narrow Sea."

"Robert Baratheon won the iron throne without dragons, and so can we. Even if something goes wrong, and people don't rise up, we can always retreat Across the Narrow Sea, just like Cold Iron and others did back then."

Harry shook his head, "The risk of this!"

"—is not great. We haven't broken our contract, we haven't signed a treaty with the Myr men. We've only shown some goodwill to the liberator, defeating Bloodbeard. Mutual attacks among Mercenaries are common. In this campaign, the Myr men are bound to suffer a crushing defeat, and the Cat's Company will be annihilated. If the liberator takes advantage of the situation to defeat the Three Daughters, then we will formally cooperate with him. If the liberator's luck turns, and the Three Daughters want to defeat the liberator, they will also need to rely more on us, curry favor with us, and we will get more gold. This is a win-win; we will always achieve victory!"

"So now, we need to charge!" Franklin Flowers laughed heartily. "Let's all work together to give the liberator a small hand. This kid has guts, he's a true man!"

Then Peake said, "I'd rather die in Westeros than grow old in the Disputed Lands, leaving my Children to wander." Marco Mandrake chuckled in response, "As for me, I'd rather live happily, enjoying rich farmlands and a large castle."

Franklin Flowers slapped his sword hilt and cried, "We'll help the King of the Wolf Pack first! I also want to kill a few rotten Fossoways!"

The Commander's expression was like he had been slapped. "You've all gone mad!"

The Golden Company's officers raised their arms one by one, then charged down. The last to do so was their Commander, Homeless Harry... The defeat was like a landslide; Bloodbeard saw the Wolf Pack Company's soldiers advancing, the heavy infantry of the Wolf Pack Company and the light infantry of the Free Army. He saw the wandering Mercenaries abandon their armor and weapons and flee into the surrounding forests.

Bloodbeard's most elite vanguard was also collapsing; the shield wall formed by the Wolf Pack Company and the Free Army broke apart, and the cheering taxi soldiers raised their grayish-white Wolf Pack banners and surged forward, axes, verticals, greatswords, and Longspears creating a smile of death.

"Success!" Gendry breathed a sigh of relief. The Free Army warriors' formation was at best a low-cost Unsullied; the Unsullied were too anti-human and costly. That's why the Wolf Pack cavalry and infantry charges were needed to get them into formation.

The nearby longbow team, under the command of the Arrow Maker, launched wave after wave of shots, arrows falling like rain.

"Long live the Wolf Pack!"

"Long live the liberator!" Steel Fist led the Wolf Pack infantry, and Gray Wolf led the Free Army. The military formation surged like a flood, and the Cat's Company and Myr Mercenaries, attempting to resist before the flood, were quickly engulfed in slaughter.

Bloodbeard was furious, "I lost this battle, but I still have a chance. I will return to Myr to recruit soldiers and take revenge again."

Bloodbeard retreated quickly on horseback, but his appearance was too conspicuous. Bloodbeard was a loud, savage strongman, tall, with a large beard, fiery red sideburns, and long braids, and broad shoulders.

Bloodbeard and Gendry met at a small river, with fierce battle raging around them.

"Kid, you ruined me, now I'm going to ruin you!" Bloodbeard shouted.

Bloodbeard drew his longsword, which transformed into a terrifying shadow. Bloodbeard's sword light was both fast and venomous.

Gendry raised his warhammer and quickly met him. Gendry first counterattacked, then feigned an attack, fiercely hammering Bloodbeard from another direction. Bloodbeard slashed at his face, and Gendry dodged, as agile as a lynx.

The warhammer struck towards Bloodbeard's heart, heavy and fierce. Bloodbeard hastily dodged, and the warhammer hit his ribs, making it difficult for Bloodbeard to resist. Bloodbeard endured the pain, then slashed with his longsword. Gendry dodged the first blow, blocked the second, and then blocked the third thrust to the center. Their movements were so fast that onlookers could barely see them.

"Crack!" The warhammer let out a terrifying whistle, striking Bloodbeard's other side ribs again. The bones fractured, and a dent appeared on his plate armor. Bloodbeard endured the physical pain, twisted vigorously, and pulled another long knife from his horse's back—a dark, textured Valyrian arakh—slashing at Gendry's face.

"Die!" Gendry dodged the blade; Bloodbeard's speed had already slowed. Gendry's warhammer struck Bloodbeard's temple, leaving a large dent in his helmet. Bloodbeard fell to the ground, blood bubbles emerging from his mouth.

Gendry picked up Bloodbeard's arakh; the long knife was as dark as smoke. It was said that the Windblown also had one, which was a pleasant surprise.

But why didn't Bloodbeard use the arakh from the start? Perhaps he preferred using a longsword. After all, the dothraki used the arakh best, or perhaps he underestimated Gendry, saving it as a trump card to kill him.

The cavalry charge continued to thunder, engulfing Bloodbeard's body with hooves, sharp blades, and fury.

"That's good steel!" The Knights of the Golden Company also rushed to Gendry, praising him. They had witnessed the brutal and swift duel; Bloodbeard had become rotten flesh on the ground.
