Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Baby’s First Words

Father's POV

My son, he isn't a small child but another possessing him. He isn't dumb, I have overheard him talking to himself before and it's rather disturbing. My innocent Avery is a grown man contained within him. I should kill him but I can't bring myself to swing the blow. Maybe I'm imagining things right? Is there some sort of ability that could take over bodies, maybe a blessing?

What should I do? Killing him isn't on the cards, should I just leave it be and hope he isn't an evil being. I contemplated as I sat down at the table. It's been what? Four whole years yet he hasn't tried anything. He must be using us or maybe he is genuinely not evil. He could just be a poor soul forced into my son and is just trying to spend his days.

If that's the case then I can't tell Florence. She isn't as understanding as I. Hopefully I'm right to believe we're in no harm but it still shakes me when I look at him. From what I've concluded he used to live in some place called Japan. Maybe it's in Oblivus? He wants to learn magic because it was something of a myth in Japan. Maybe magic was limited so people believed it wasn't real and finally that he was twenty six before he came here.

Well here on the Emperius continent in Valencia I plan to give him a good life and treat him as my own son regardless of his truth he is my son in my eyes. I sat up from my desk in the library, closing a book regarding blessings and made my way to the kitchen. Florence was cooking up some Dinner and Avery was idly sitting on the chair, his smile matched his mothers. Bright and comforting even if he slightly frightened me.

Father: Avery. Do you want to come to dada?

Avery: Dada! Dada!

Florence dropped her plate, her eyes widened and her jaw dropping. The plate hit the floor, smashing into shards. I was generally unfazed as I have heard his deep conversations before but still, to Florence this is his first word so maybe I should play along.

Father: Wow! Avery, that's good! Say it again!

Avery: Dada! Dada! Dada!

Mother: Holy crap! He said his first word!

Florence sprinted over quickly embracing Avery as she smiled in delight. My two most precious people were lighting up with smiles and even with all the stress of Avery, I began to laugh. I was happy to see this big step in my family. No matter how complicated we all are, they are most precious to me.

Avery's POV

I said my first words, well at least what they think are my first words. I didn't want them to keep worrying and with this I can finally begin proper conversations with them. It'll take some time but this is the first step into connecting more with my parents.

My mother quickly swept up the mess she made from her excitement and we dug in, enjoying our dinner. After dinner I was taken up to bed and put to sleep. My eyes glued to the roof as I started to think quietly aloud.

Avery: Today was pretty good, I think soon I could start breaking out more words and use that to eventually ask for magic lessons. Even if it's a one in twenty chance I just have this feeling that I'm destined for something great.

I closed my eyes as I heard light footsteps down the corridor. Even if that was somebody I doubt they heard me. I drifted off to sleep. I sat atop the bridge once again, staring down at the water before I quickly remembered the last time. I jumped backwards onto the pavement. A rush of pain ran down my back. How could I feel that? Isn't this supposed to be a dream?

Suddenly I lifted off the floor and levitated back up to the railing and then was pushed off again. The fall felt just as scary as last time and I looked upon the water approaching. I closed my eyes and felt the air pull me down.

I opened my eyes as the light from the windows poured in. I lifted myself out of bed and walked out to the corridor. Peering into my parents room they were still out cold. I smirked and quickly stumbled over to the library, grabbing a giant brown book. It had gold symbols drawn upon it with a crest of a staff embedded onto it.

I flipped through the pages before opening up to a new page. I haven't read this one before, what could it be about? Obtainment of magic through other means? That's interesting.

Magic is a rare and powerful thing that only a select few can obt- blah blah blah, oh! Wait, this is good. While magic is usually only usable if you're born with it you can access its abilities by taming a monster with powerful mana and channeling your mana through it, consuming a rare mana apple. While only one has been found on the Lost Continent it is agreed that more are on the continent. Finally the last option is… it's crossed out? It doesn't look like my mother did this either, it looks like the actual author scribbled it.

Well that's no help, the Lost Continent huh? Said to be the most powerful of all the continents until monsters swarmed the land and killed off all the humans. The monsters there are considered the most powerful and attempts to reclaim it so far have failed.

Welp, it's not like I need some mana apple anyway. Obviously because of how gifted I am. I need to hurry up and speak more so I can start learning magic. I also need to get checked to see what mana type I am, maybe I'm a solid type or a liquid type, maybe I'm an energy type. What if I'm one of the lucky few healers!

Footsteps slowly stepped towards the Library as I quickly slammed the book shut and returned it. The door swung open as my father looked down at me, another one of his fake smiles drew out before he swung me up and carried me away.
