Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: Christine's permission

The next morning, sunlight filtered softly through the apartment curtains. Mary stood in the kitchen, pouring tea with hands that trembled despite the stream rising form the mug. Christine sat at the small table, her fingers wrapped around her own cup, staring into the dark liquid as though it contained answers she had been searching all night. The soft hum of the city below reached them through the open window _ a reminder that life went on outside, indifferent to their worries.

Mary glanced at her daughter, " slept well?"

Christine shrugged, her lips pressed together in line " I guess " her voice carried a heaviness that Mary immediately recognized as the weight of unspoken thoughs.

Mary sat down her mug and walked over gently placing a hand over Christine's ," Christine you know can tell me anything. You know that right?"

Christine lifted her eyes, dark and earnest, " I know and that's exactly why I am going to say this now."

Mary's heart skipped, she felt the familiar tightness of fear, mixed with curiosity and a dash of dread, "okay " she whispered. " I'm listening. "

Christine took a slow breath, gripping her mug with both hands as if drawing strength from it. " Mom I've been hiding something from you."

Mary froze. her chest constricted. " What... what is it?"

Christine's eyes met hers, steady yet tinged with vulnerability. " I know about Daniel."

Mary's lips parted in shock. " you.. what?"

" I've know fir a longtime, " Christine said softly, her voice calm but carrying weight." Not all the detail, but maybe to see the truth, I've noticed how he look at you, Mom I've noticed how you look at him. I had some thing you didn't think I could here Too." Her lips trembled slightly as she continue, yet there was a quiet conviction in her tone, " I didn't say anything before because I didn't want to makes things harder for you. But.... I think you need to hear this."

Mary's chest tightened so violently she felt as if she might collapse " Christine... I_"

Christine raised a hand stopping her," please let me finish "

Mary swallowed nodded, slightly.

" I'm not upset, I'm not jealous. I want you to be happy, Mom. I really do," Christine continued her gaze unwavering. " I've been watching you noticing small things. How your smile return when you though no one was looking. How your eyes lingered on him when he spoke to you. And then... suddenly... You left him. You avoided his name. You cried at night and I saw it. I knew something had changed. "

Mary's throat close " Christine_ I didn't want to see that _"

" but, I did" Christine said gently " I wasn't angry, I wasn't jealous, I just worried... I thought maybe i was the reason you had to leave him. Maybe I was holding you back. But the I realized something _ " she took a deep breath. I don't want to be the reason you denied yourself happiness, "

Mary's eyes brimmed with tears. She had expected anger, disappointment, maybe resentment _ but not this: understanding, Acceptance. Her daughter, Her own child, was offering her permission to follow her heart. Even it's mean loving Daniel.

Christine leaned forward, voice softened " I know it's complicated, I know the decisions you had to make weren't easy. But I'm not a child anymore. I understand more than you think. And I don't want fear, guilt or anyone's else expectation to keep you from what could make you happy."

Mary's lips trembled " Christine... I can't explain_"

Christine shook her, smiling faintly through the tension. " you don't have to. Just know this: I see you, I see you heart and I am okay with what's happening. As long as you are happy that's what matters."

Mary felt her chest swell with a mixture of relief and grief. Relief that her daughter was strong enough to understand, grief of the the life they had lost, and hope _ small fragile hope_ and that maybe, just maybe, love could survive after all. "

Christine reached out and took Mary's hands

In hers holding them firmly. " there's more," she admit eyes glistening. " I've been holding back more than that."

Mary leaned forward, concerning flaring," more?"

Christine nodded her lips pressed together.

" before everything..., before the accident ...., before we came here.... I saw him once. Daniel. " Her voice lowered. " he didn't know know I knew who he was. But I overheard him talking about you..... about us. I wanted to tell you. But I didn't know how, I didn't want to embarrassed you or ruin anything."

Mary's heart raced " Christine....you should have told me."

" I know" Christine said softly. " but I was scared. I thought I might make things worse, I thought...maybe I'd only add to your burden."

Mary's hands trembled as she reached across the table, pulling Christine gentle into an embrace, " oh, Christine... I've been so afraid I'd hurt you, I'd ruin your life."

Christine rested her head against Mary's shoulder exhaling slowly." You never could. I love to much for that. I just want to live fully, Mom. To not fear , worry or anyone's control stop you from being happy."

Mary closed her eyes, letting herself feel the weight of the moment _ the fear, the guilt, the love and now the unspoken permission from her daughter to embraced what her heart desires.

Christine pulled back slightly, eyes bright with quiet determination. " I'm not angry, I'm not jealous. I .... just. I just want see you happy. That's it. I want you to let yourself feel it, even it's scary or complicated. "

Christine gave a faint smile through her own tears. " I learned from the best."

They stayed in the embrace for a long time, the soft hum of the city below a gentle remind that life went on. But inside the apartment, mother and daughter had found a quiet moment of clarity, of honesty, of hope."

For the first time since leaving home, Mary allowed herself to feel that spark_ a fragile but real hope , that love, survival and happiness could all exist together.

And Christine, sitting in her mother's arm, knew that supporting her mother's heart was one of the bravest choices she could make.
