Chapter 34 - Where is your mother?

As time passed, no one remained in the same carriage as Leo.

Leo did not care much; he simply assumed the woman was constipated and chuckled to himself.

His plan had been to stay there until the woman returned, but a train attendant showed up and asked him to step outside.

Leo glanced at the little girl playing with Snowy and attempted to explain the situation to the man, but before he could even open his mouth, he felt a familiar sensation in his chest.

Reflexively, Leo reached for his chest to check his system, but the moment his hand touched it, he sensed the system slipping back inside his chest.

The first possibility that crossed his mind was that the person about to experience the lucky event had stepped out of range.

Under the attendant's confused stare, Leo placed the kitten in his bag, gathered his things, and stood up.

"Where we going, oppa?"

"We're already at the last stop. When your mom comes out of the bathroom, she'll probably step outside to look for us. She might even be outside and searching right now."

The little girl suddenly remembered that Leo was a stranger, and her voice shrank with a touch of fear as she objected.

"But my mom told me to wait here."

Leo, scanning the area, failed to notice the girl's emotional shift. He gave her the first answer that came to mind and stepped out of the train.

"Didn't you hear what the guy said earlier? They're waiting for us to get off so they can move the train to the parking area. Even if your mom is still inside, they'll send her out as soon as she comes out of the bathroom."

The girl's age matched her intelligence, and naturally, out of everything Leo said, she latched onto only one thing.

"Oppa, my mom always parks her car in the garage at our house. Do the conductor uncles also have garages at their homes where they park trains?"

"Of course they do. Haven't you ever seen one? Since their trains are huge, their homes are huge too."

A little "waooow" escaped the girl's mouth, her eyes sparkling like stars. Seeing this, Leo continued feeding her with ridiculous information while guiding her toward the end of the train.

"Since trains are super long, the conductors' houses are super long too, you know? I even heard that one conductor uncle once wet himself because of that. You know how it is—he ran from his bedroom all the way down his long hallway, but he couldn't reach the bathroom in time."

The attendant walking behind them twitched his eyebrow violently, while the girl giggled, trying to imagine everything Leo was describing.

As Leo passed the section between the carriages—the one with the bathrooms—he glanced at the door the woman had entered.

His eyesight had fully recovered, so Leo had clearly seen from afar which bathroom she went into.

But now, when he looked, the lock indicator on the bathroom door on the left side of the carriage was green. That meant no one was inside.

Leo turned to the attendant in confusion.

"This bathroom is empty, right?"

The attendant did not even bother checking.

"Sir, there are public restrooms you can use inside the station. Please stop delaying us."

Leo was not at all annoyed by being brushed off. While his mind spun rapidly, he glanced at the small hand holding his own.

"Actually, now that I think about it, I was wearing a wristwatch when I boarded the train." Before continuing, Leo lifted his empty wrist and showed it to the attendant. "I think I hung it behind the door when I came into this bathroom earlier. You know, even imagining it getting dirty while cleaning drives me insane."

Hearing this, the attendant frowned and scolded Leo sharply.

"I hope it wasn't something expensive, kid. Because even if it was, this is a public restroom—it's probably already been stolen. And before you even ask, don't expect any sort of reimbursement. I, don't ,care, if it was a gift from your dead grandfather or grandmother. Obviously, we don't install cameras in the bathrooms and—"

Leo cut him off with a cheerful tone, as if interrupting a rap performance.

"haha, please let me steal a moment from your speaking. It was just a cheap watch. Could you check if it's still there? Even if it isn't, it's all fine."

The attendant visibly relaxed and stepped inside, opening the door to check behind it.

The moment the door opened, an odd lump of saliva that refused to go down suddenly appeared in Leo's throat.

He didn't want to jump to the worst conclusion yet. Just as he'd told the girl earlier, her mother might genuinely be outside looking for her.

"Let's go."

The little girl said nothing and continued holding his hand, following him.

When the attendant stepped out without a watch in his hand, he saw that Leo had already guided the girl out of the carriage.

He hadn't found the watch, but he also didn't care enough to chase after Leo.

Leo then spent the next thirty minutes searching the station for the girl's mother.

Even with help from the station staff, he found nothing.

The girl cried for five minutes because she couldn't see her mother. Thankfully, unlike in his current life, Leo in his previous life had been a responsible adult who knew how to calm children.

With a few gentle words and some sweets, he managed to soothe her.

When the police arrived at the station following reports from the staff, the girl—emotionally exhausted after half an hour—had fallen asleep in Leo's arms while holding Snowy.
