Chapter 5 - The Case Of The Moonlit Killer

Officer Brent was so keen on figuring out what was responsible for the killings. After the incidents and reports about the recent sightings of a mysterious man-like wolf creature lurking in the city. The reports were eerily similar to the attacks he had encountered during his investigation of Keith's case. Determined to uncover the truth and possibly find a way to stop these monstrous attacks, Brent decided to delve into the world of folklore and legends surrounding werewolves. He knew that the answers he sought might lie within the pages of ancient texts and forgotten tales.

With a sense of purpose, Officer Brent made his way to the city's central library. The Great Library lies in the heart of the city. It was the biggest home of knowledge in New York and housed history of the old and new within its four walls. The hallowed halls of knowledge welcomed him as Officer Brent stepped inside, and he couldn't help but feel a surge of anticipation.

"Who would have thought I would come here? A building I had always admired since I was a kid," Brent thought as he walked through the halls. He saw a white desk with a woman seated. She looked like someone in charge so he approached her. As he approached the librarian, a wise-looking woman with spectacles perched on her nose.

"Good evening, ma'am," Officer Brent greeted politely. "Who is in charge here? I'm looking for books or journals on werewolves," he said.

The librarian nodded and led him to a section dedicated to mythology and urban legend. She handed him a stack of books and journals, cautioning him to handle them with care. "Be careful with these, Officer. Some of them are quite old and delicate."

Brent thanked her and settled into a quiet corner of the library.

The dim light from the old-fashioned lamps added to the ambiance as he opened the first book. Ancient tales of werewolves and lycanthropy filled the pages, recounting stories of cursed beings who transformed into wolves during full moons.

After hours of intense reading, one journal caught his eye. It was a recently published work that seemed to discuss the sightings of the man-like wolf creature he was investigating. Excitement filled his heart as he carefully turned the pages, hoping to find the answers he sought.

The journal contained eyewitness accounts of terrifying encounters with the creature. Descriptions of vicious attacks, with strange bite marks similar to Keith's case, sent a chill down Brent's spine.

The victims' testimonies echoed the haunting screams and howls that had plagued the city in recent weeks.

"I think I might be onto something," Brent muttered to himself, scribbling down notes on a notepad. The puzzle pieces were slowly coming together, but he needed more information to form a complete picture.

He continued to read, finding similarities in the creature's behavior and Keith's struggles.

Just as he was about to read further, a soft voice interrupted his thoughts. "Interesting subject you're delving into, Officer."

Brent looked up to find a woman standing next to him. Her dark hair cascaded over her shoulders, and her eyes sparkled with curiosity.

"I couldn't help but notice you've been reading about werewolves," she continued, her smile warm and inviting.

"Yes, I'm investigating some unusual cases," Brent replied, intrigued by her interest in the topic.

"Is this about the cannibal attack? You think it's a werewolf?" the lady questioned.

"Take it easy. It's too soon to call it that. This is a fresh case and we are trying to figure out what exactly we are dealing with," Officer Brent responded.

"I'm happy to know the police authorities are working hard on this. The killings have been random these days. I mean just a few days, a senior colleague was brutally injured by this monster," the lady explained.

The woman extended her hand. "Pardon my manners, Officer. I'm Dr. Emily Adams. I specialize in folklore and myths. Perhaps I can be of assistance?"

Brent shook her hand gratefully. "I'm Officer Brent. Any help would be much appreciated."

Dr. Adams took a seat beside him, and they delved into a deep conversation about werewolf legends and historical accounts of similar creatures. Brent shared his findings from the journal, and Dr. Adams listened intently, her expression thoughtful.

"It seems there might be some truth to these stories," she said, her eyes narrowing in contemplation. "The werewolf myth spans across different cultures and periods. There must be some basis for these tales."

"Do you think we are dealing with a werewolf here?" Officer Brent asked, eager to hear her view on the matter.

"Officer, this is not the first the supernatural is hitting us. Let's just say it is now we have realized that there are demons and monsters amongst us. There have been some killings in some years which I find suspicious to be werewolf activity but reports tell us differently," Dr. Adams said.

"Officer Brent. I think you need to revisit those cases. You might find a clearer clue," she added.

Officer Brent nodded as he considered Dr. Adam's words. "You may be right," he said. "I'll go back and review the old files. There could be a pattern I missed."

Brent returned to his office and began pouring over the case files from previous years. Several unsolved attacks were dating back at least five years. Victims had been mauled in the woods, their remains too mangled to determine an exact cause of death. Wildlife attacks had been concluded as the likely culprit.

But now, Brent wondered if a werewolf may have been responsible. He remembered one particularly gruesome scene where a teenage girl had been found torn to pieces. Her parents swore she had not wandered that deep into the woods alone. Brent had never been able to solve that mystery.

"It fits the pattern," Brent muttered to himself as he examined photos from the case. The savagery of the attack was unlike any animal Brent had seen before. A werewolf would explain it.

Brent continued reviewing cases, searching for connections between victims, the time of the attacks, and location. After a while, he noticed a pattern. All of the attacks occurred within two weeks surrounding the full moon. The locations also clustered around a remote part of the forest.

"It's got to be a werewolf," Brent said aloud, slamming his fist on the desk in realization. "How did we miss this?"
