Chapter 148 - Cold-Blooded Nemesis

"A perfect plan, and you're the biggest beneficiary. It's disgusting!" Jill spat out her opinion of Zhou Yi coldly. The look in her eyes, as if she were looking at something foul, made Zhou Yi feel puzzled and very uncomfortable.

He frowned and asked,

"Miss Valentine, I'm curious. Why do you look at me this way? If it's just about the previous issue, I swear it was all a misunderstanding!"

"It has nothing to do with that, Mr. Rich!" Jill waved her hand, interrupting him. "If you want to know why, I can tell you directly. I loathe you because of everything you've done."

Zhou Yi sat up straight, feigning attentiveness.

"You knew everything Umbrella was doing. You could have exposed them much earlier. But why did you wait until now to come forward? You're nothing more than a scoundrel who saw an opportunity, a vulture waiting for its prey to die, hoping to scavenge a piece of the pie from Umbrella's wreckage. Everything you've done is only for your own benefit. You never considered how many people died because you stood by and did nothing."

This was Jill's innermost truth, and also her truest feelings after learning about Zhou Yi's secrets regarding Umbrella and his identity. Her heart was filled with hatred for Zhou Yi. It was something she had buried deep down, but after her special experiences, she no longer concealed this emotion, but instead exposed it directly to Zhou Yi.

A strange impulse drove her to do this. She really wanted to know how Zhou Yi would face the fury in her heart.

Zhou Yi's reaction to Jill's obvious emotions was very calm.

"Finished? If you are, you can pack up and get ready to start your mission. Time is of the essence; Umbrella can no longer control the Monsters they've bred."

After saying this, he stood up, seemingly ready to leave. However, Jill couldn't accept this at all. She had imagined many scenarios, but she hadn't anticipated Zhou Yi being this calm, as if none of this had anything to do with him.

This made her feel angry, perhaps because of Zhou Yi's indifference, or perhaps because of her fallen comrades. Either way, it was enough for her to stand in front of Zhou Yi and accuse him.

"Don't you feel any guilt? Aren't you ashamed of what you've done?" She widened her eyes, her expression as sharp as a sword.

"Ashamed? Why? Just because I came forward and said I know all this?" Zhou Yi finally changed his expression, but it wasn't the anger Jill had expected. Instead, it was a mockery, as if he were watching a farce.

"Do you really think I'm the only one who knows? I can tell you, there are many more than just me. It's just that I appeared before you and told you what I know. You can say these nonsense to me. If I hadn't said anything, what right would you have to question me?"

"If we're talking about guilt, many people are guilty. At this moment, Miss Valentine, you should be thanking me, not hating me. Because among those who know, I'm the only one willing to save you. As for those who have died, I am sorry. But if we're talking about guilt, then I can only be even more sorry."

After saying all this, Jill's expression became extremely strange. She stared fixedly at Zhou Yi, as if trying to see a hint of psychological change on his face. But this was in vain. So in the end, she could only turn her head away.

"You are a cold-blooded Devil!" This was her final denunciation.

"But this Devil can save the remaining people in this city!" Zhou Yi didn't care about this verbal attack; he just pushed open the door, signaling Jill to follow him.

Jill followed Zhou Yi silently, although she still hated him in her heart. But at this time, she also had to follow behind him, because as Zhou Yi said, only by following him could she save more innocent citizens.

The Umbrella branch, once bustling with activity, had become much quieter. Umbrella had withdrawn a considerable number of important personnel to avoid arousing suspicion. They even gave all the employees two weeks of paid leave.

This caused those unsuspecting employees to thank the company for its generosity. They naively believed that this was because of the chaotic situation in Raccoon City, and the company was taking protective measures for them. Ignorance is sometimes bliss, but sometimes it also means being closer to death. These employees were like that; they were all Umbrella's castoffs, things that were abandoned along with the city.

However, the building was far from being deserted. In the central laboratory of the building, a group of people were monitoring a pile of sophisticated instruments. The instruments displayed the structure of a human body, and judging from the outline of the chest, it was a woman.

Woman, one of the two major categories of humans. But here, she had lost her meaning, because no one here would see her as a woman. The people here only saw them as Test Subjects, on the same level as white mice. They had already experimented on many such beings and had long ignored their true identities.

"No problem, the experiment can begin!" A voice called out from the group. Soon, someone else responded with something like, "Ready, experiment commencing." The instruments began to hum, and as they did, a sound came from another part of the building, a place that looked like an operating room.

The lights flickered on, and various medical devices began to operate. Some kind of special serum was injected into a woman lying on a hospital bed by a mechanical arm. As this strange serum began to take effect, the woman on the bed slowly woke up.

She first looked around in confusion, then immediately clutched her head and cried out. Intense pain was assailing her brain, causing her to recall everything about her life in agony.

However, her cries of pain attracted the attention of some people. Two armed Umbrella Special Forces soldiers pushed open the door to the emergency room. Seeing the woman awake, they looked surprised. But soon they moved forward, wanting to subdue her first.

Fully armed soldiers and a woman with nothing on her body, who would have the advantage? It seemed obvious, but in fact, it was the opposite.

The soldier's hand had just touched the woman's shoulder when she grabbed his wrist. The bent joint forced the soldier to turn his body, and at this moment. The woman had already sprung up from the bed, a knee strike hitting the soldier's waist.

The sound of bone breaking was unusually clear in this room, meaning that even if this soldier didn't die, he wouldn't be able to walk on his feet for the rest of his life. And this sound clearly frightened his companion.

He quickly raised his gun and began to fire at the woman. But the woman was very smart, crouching down and hiding behind the paralyzed soldier.

The soldier, unwilling to harm his comrades, quickly moved his gun away. But the woman seized the opportunity, snatching the pistol strapped to the soldier's thigh.

A single shot, and the bullet pierced the soldier's head. The man with the gun fell into a pool of blood.

Having dealt with the threat, the woman put her hand on the neck of the soldier whose spine was broken. With a sudden burst of strength, this soldier followed his comrade's path.

After doing all this, the woman bared her teeth. The previous movements were too strenuous, causing the syringes in her body to tear her veins. She hadn't felt it during the fight, but now the pain immediately surged.

She quickly pulled out those needles, only to be surprised to find her wounds healing at a visible rate. This bizarre scene immediately brought a touch of gloom to her eyes. At the same time, she also felt a very bad premonition.

She quickly searched her body, and soon, she found a strange needle mark on her arm.

The evenly distributed needle marks, like plum blossoms, instantly turned her face pale. As a former member of Umbrella, especially one who knew the inside story, she naturally knew what this needle mark meant. She had become a Test Subject, a Monster that could change at any moment.

This was something she found difficult to accept, but she had to. Because a more serious problem was in front of her: her life safety.

The sound of heavy footsteps came from outside the door, the kind of weighty sound that immediately told the battle-hardened woman that it was a fully armed team running. Obviously, the gunfire had already attracted enough attention.

Being able to easily take down two soldiers didn't mean she could handle a squad of well-trained soldiers. Without the element of surprise, she had no confidence in surviving a volley of shots.

So, without a second thought, she grabbed the bed sheet beneath her. She slammed directly into the floor-to-ceiling window on one side. The glass window was no match for the woman's impact; the glass shattered instantly, and the woman, wrapped in the bed sheet, crashed out of the building, plummeting straight down from the fifth floor.

A container truck was directly beneath the woman. Her body slammed into the top of the truck, immediately denting the truck's cargo area. Since the truck was in such a state, the woman naturally wasn't doing well either.

Her arm was twisted into a strange position, with a piece of bone even sticking out from her forearm. This was because she had used her arm to cushion the impact when she landed. And her internal organs had obviously suffered a certain degree of impact, as a large amount of blood was coming out of her nostrils and mouth.

This would be a certain death situation for an ordinary person. But it didn't apply to this woman because she was already supporting herself and flipped off the truck, and then she vanished swiftly into the street.

It must be said that it was fortunate that Raccoon City was deserted at this time, with most people already hiding in their homes. Especially on the street in front of Umbrella, there wasn't a single person. Otherwise, the woman's current state would definitely scare a lot of people.

And just after the woman disappeared into the street, a soldier peeked out from the top of a building not far away. He was still holding a sniper rifle with a large caliber, and if you looked closely, you would find that the crosshairs of his scope had been locked on the woman's body.

However, he didn't fire. Instead, he watched as the woman disappeared into a shop. Only then did he speak into the communicator on his ear.

"Sir, the target has entered the experimental zone. Repeat, the target has entered the experimental zone."

Edward's voice came from his earpiece.

"Good. You can return to the team."

"Yes, sir!" the sniper replied, already retreating into the shadows behind him, carrying his sniper rifle. It was as if he'd never been there at all.

As he left, the woman suddenly turned her head. Through the shop window, she stared at the spot where he had been watching her. Although she saw nothing, she knew someone had been watching her.

This made her uneasy, so she quickly pushed open the back door of the shop and quietly slipped away through the alley.
