The sun dipped low, turning the school windows orange like molten glass. The infirmary felt too small for three people and one broken reality.
Arjun sat on the bed, head lowered, hands trembling against his knees. Sweat made his long black hair cling to his temples. His grey-brown eyes pulsed with faint micro-shifts of light as the system tried to stabilize him.
Meera hovered close, almost afraid to blink. Her fingers kept brushing Arjun's shoulder, checking if he was still conscious.
Rahul guarded the door. Samar paced like a caged animal whose instincts had outgrown the cage.
None of them spoke.
Then—
Arjun inhaled sharply. His chest spasmed. His vision flickered white.
[Origin Path: 15% → 21%] [Instinctive Counter: 92% → 94%] [Warning: System Pressure Rising]
He grabbed the metal railing beside the bed, knuckles whitening.
Meera jumped. "Arjun?! Talk to me—"
Samar was beside him instantly.
"What did Rudra do to you?"
Arjun shook his head. "He didn't do anything. This… this was already inside me."
Another spasm hit him.
He bit down a cry.
Meera leaned forward, brushing hair from his face. Her brown eyes glistened. "Arjun… you're burning up."
Samar noticed something else.
Arjun's pupils were shrinking and widening—rhythmically.
"Your eyes…" Samar murmured. "They're syncing to something."
Arjun exhaled shakily. "The System."
Rahul cursed softly.
Samar's jaw tightened. "We need answers. Now."
A school-wide announcement cut through the halls:
"All students will remain inside classrooms. Doors will be locked. No one is allowed outside the building until Velocity completes perimeter safety protocols."
The voice trembled despite trying to sound official.
Rahul peeked out the infirmary door. "Agents everywhere. Guns too. Real ones."
Meera paled.
"We… we've never had guns here before."
Samar looked out the window.
"They're preparing for another awakening."
Arjun's head snapped toward him. "No… it's not that."
Samar raised a brow. "Then what is it?"
Before Arjun could speak—
A low hum vibrated through the floor. Deep. Wrong. Predatory.
Arjun froze.
His instincts shrieked.
[Proximity Alert] [Unstable Entity Approaching] Threat Class: UNKNOWN] Distance: < 200m]
His breath caught.
Meera sensed it. "Arjun…?"
Arjun whispered:
"…something is coming."
Rahul stiffened. "Something?"
Samar stepped closer, expression sharpening. "What did Rudra say? Something about…"
Arjun finished the sentence with dread:
"Failed experiments."
The room fell silent.
Outside, near the school gate, screams erupted.
Velocity agents rushed forward in formation—rifles raised, scanners humming, barking commands. Students trapped inside classrooms pressed their faces to the windows, terror creeping across their features.
Arjun rose from the bed shakily.
Meera caught his arm. "No—stay—"
"I can't."
He pushed forward.
Samar grabbed his other arm. "Don't be stupid. If you go out—"
Arjun met Samar's eyes.
"I can feel it. It's looking for awakened signatures."
Samar froze.
Rahul whispered, "How do you know that?"
Arjun touched his chest.
"The system is reacting to it."
The hum outside grew louder.
Then—a shape slammed into the front gate with a metallic crash.
Students screamed.
Velocity agents opened fire.
Arjun's heart stopped.
The shape stood up.
Its silhouette is jerky. Too tall. Limbs shaking like loose wires. Head tilted unnaturally, chin almost touching its chest.
It had once been human.
Now it looked like something trying to remember what "human" meant.
Meera covered her mouth. "Oh god… oh god…"
The creature twitched violently, its neck snapping upright with a sickening crack. It jerked its head toward the building—toward Arjun specifically.
[Threat Lock: YOU] [Reason: Awakening Signature Detected]
Arjun staggered backward.
Samar stepped in front of him instinctively.
Rahul swore under his breath. "That thing wants you, bro."
Arjun couldn't deny it.
His system pulsed like a second heart.
The creature screeched—digital, broken, agonizing. Then sprinted toward the school.
Velocity agents fired again—but the bullets barely slowed it.
Samar clenched his jaw. "We're leaving. Now."
Meera grabbed Arjun's hand. "We can hide in the supply cellar—"
"No," Arjun said quietly.
Rahul stared at him. "What do you mean NO?"
Arjun looked out the window.
The creature was climbing the walls.
Toward them.
"I can't run from something that hunts awakening."
Samar grabbed Arjun's collar and pulled him close, eyes burning with anger.
"You idiot—are you TRYING to die?!"
Arjun met his gaze.
"…I'm trying not to get all of you killed."
Samar froze.
Meera shook her head violently. "Stop—STOP. Don't say that—don't act like sacrificing yourself is normal—"
Her voice cracked. Tears fell freely now.
"Arjun, please… I can't lose you."
Her words shook him in ways the system couldn't stabilize.
But the creature kept climbing.
And the system made the decision for him.
Blue text filled his vision:
[ORIGIN TRIAL 1 INITIATED] Survive direct contact with an awakened predator. Failure: System Shutdown → Catastrophic Success: Origin Path Stabilization +30% Time Limit: 18 Hours
Arjun whispered:
"…it's starting."
Samar's eyes widened. "What is it?"
"The Origin Trial."
The creature reached the second floor. Its claws dug into the wall. Its head jerked toward the infirmary window.
Meera screamed. Rahul yelled for the nurse to hide. Samar shoved Arjun behind him.
But before the creature could break the glass—
A shadow flashed down from the rooftop above.
Fast. Clean. Silent.
A boot connected with the creature's skull.
The entire hallway shook.
The monster fell three floors, smashing into the courtyard.
Meera gasped. Rahul's jaw dropped. Samar's eyes widened in grudging disbelief.
Arjun whispered:
"...Rudra."
Rudra landed on the infirmary window frame with perfect balance, despite the broken glass under his boots. His long, tied-back hair swung behind him like a dark banner.
He wiped blood from his knuckles casually.
Then looked at Arjun.
"You're early," Rudra said.
Arjun frowned. "What do you mean early?"
Rudra pointed downward at the twitching monster.
"Origin Trial wasn't supposed to begin until tomorrow morning."
Arjun felt his blood run cold.
Meera whispered, horrified, "Then why did it start now?"
Rudra met Arjun's eyes.
"Because your presence accelerated it."
Samar stepped forward angrily. "You mean he caused this?!"
"No." Rudra's tone sharpened.
"He attracted it."
Arjun felt like vomiting.
Rudra continued:
"The moment your 24-hour mark triggered, any experimental survivor within two kilometers started smelling you."
Meera grabbed Arjun's sleeve in fear.
Rahul whispered, "Bro… you're a beacon."
Rudra nodded.
"And every broken thing is walking toward that beacon."
Arjun's knees weakened.
Samar clenched his fists so tight they shook.
"What do we do then?" Samar demanded. "Fight? Run? Hide? What?!"
Rudra looked directly at Arjun.
"You survive the trial."
Arjun swallowed.
"How?"
Rudra stepped inside the infirmary—fully, for the first time—eyes dark and unwavering.
"You learn," he said quietly, "how to fight something that doesn't fear death."
The creature below screamed again.
Velocity regrouped.
Chaos spread.
The countdown continued to bleed time.
And Arjun realized—
This wasn't the start of the trial.
It was only the invitation.
