Chapter 1 - Eliana Thompson

They call New York the city of dreams. I'm a dreamer, and this city has seen many of my dreams realized and some shattered to pieces.

Just in case you're wondering who I am...

"Hello there, I'm Eliana. Yes, the renowned and famous Eliana Thompson you know."

I'm that girl you would call tall and curvy. 5'11 isn't short, right? I'm slim too, but I have the curves in the right places. My body is the type boys call a banging body. I'm beautiful, everyone says so, and I know so too. My hazel eyes are the kind you can drown in and never get lost. My hair is black and shiny like the sun. So when someone says I'm beautiful, I know it's true.

Actually, I'm going to be 22 in two days, and of course I'm happy about it. Although my birthday isn't exactly my favorite day. It brings back memories I never want to think about.

My parents died on my birthday. They were coming to surprise me at school, but the car brakes failed, and the rest is history. I lost my parents, and I'll never see them again. That period was painful especially for a freshman in university. Thankfully, I had the support of the George's Will family, my father's friend and our family friend. They took me in or should I say adopted me because they began treating me like one of their own. Through their careful nurturing, I was able to return to school with a stable mind. Even though my parents death was still fresh, I learned to live with it.

In school, I moved out of the apartment my parents rented for me and moved in with the George's Will twins, Aurelle and Arielle. Honestly, these girls have helped me stay sane. I would give anything to keep them happy because they've done so much for me. Becoming who I am today is because of God and their push. So when it comes to the twins, I can never say no to their requests.

"Knock knock." I heard a tap on the door and snapped out of my thoughts.

"Come in." The door opened, and Sarah, my assistant, popped her head in.

"Ma'am, it's time for the hearing."

"Oh, okay. Thank you. I hope you have all the documents ready?" I asked, earning a nod of affirmation from her.

"Alright then, let's get going."

So... I forgot to mention that I'm a lawyer. One of the best out there. I don't handle a case and lose. You can call me the undefeated. Yes, I know it sounds like bragging, but that's just how it is. I have never handled a case and lost. I'm a government lawyer too, so my services are almost free because the government handles my pay not to mention that I'm also heiress to a

billion-dollar fortune. As such, everyone wants Barr. Eliana to handle their case. My schedule is always full sometimes I have to recommend other lawyers so I don't get overwhelmed.

"Your Honor." We all rose and bowed to the judge; he bowed back. In court, respect is reciprocal.

"You may all be seated," the judge announced, and we all took our seats in the big courtroom. "Read out the case for today," the judge signaled, and the court registrar began reading. "Defense, present your arguments." My opponent stood up and began.

"Your Honor, we can't exactly say my client molested Miss Shay. They were both in a club, she was dressed in provocative clothes, and whatever happened, happened in the spur of the moment. Besides, Your Honor, when a woman says no, it means yes."

Hearing what my learned colleague was saying... it took the peace of God in me not to call him names. I was fuming; the lines on my face showed it. How dare he say that? Can't a woman dress nicely to a club again? What does he mean no means yes? I raised my hand in objection.

"Objection sustained. Barrister Thompson, you have the floor."

"Your Honor, I find what my learned colleague has just said highly dissatisfying. I want this honorable court to take note of something: when a woman says no, it means no. Let's normalize accepting that. Also, my client went to a club how exactly was she supposed to dress? It is highly appalling to know that the defense counsel's thinking is so shallow. It shows the kind of society women still have to live in.

"I will end on this note, Your Honor: regardless of how suggestive or provocative a woman dresses, her body is her body. It shouldn't be her fault that a man can't keep his penis in his pants." I submitted.

"After hearing from both sides, this honorable court hereby finds Mr. Travis Scott guilty of molesting Miss Shay Moore. This court hereby fines Mr. Travis Scott the sum of five million dollars, which shall be used to compensate Miss Shay otherwise, Mr. Travis shall be sentenced to three months in prison. The payment of the five million dollars should not exceed two weeks. Court."

"As Your Lordship pleases." Everyone stood up and bowed as the judge left the courtroom.

"Barr. Thompson." I heard my name and turned. Standing before me was the bitch of a man who called himself a lawyer.

"Barr. Alfred," I greeted, a tight smile on my lips.

"Just wanted to say congratulations. That was a good argument."

"I know, right?" I gave my signature smile almost a smirk.

"You did well too." I patted his back and walked away like the queen that I am.

"Ma'am, you were amazing," Sarah said as we walked into my office. She was half walking, half dancing from excitement. Her eyes expressed joy that knew no bounds.

"Thank you, Sarah," I smiled. Ring ring ring.

My phone.

A wide grin spread across my face when I checked the caller ID: DAM. Just the person I wanted to talk to. If the George's Will sisters keep me sane, then Damien, my boyfriend, is the one who makes sure I'm stable and able to keep going. With Damien, I'm safe. I'm at peace.

With smiles in my eyes, I picked up the call.

"Hi, baby," I heard his deep baritone the voice that always makes my heart skip.

Call me whatever you want, but I'm so whipped for this guy. I love him so much.

"Hi, my love," I replied, joy spilling through my voice.

"How are you doing?" he breathed out, and I swallowed hard.

This boy does something to me just hearing his voice is enough to push me over the edge. "I'm doing well. How about you?" I asked.

"Wanted to check on you. Are you ready to go?" Oh yeah it was almost close of work.

"In forty minutes, my love."

"Alright. I'll be there in forty."

"Okay."

"See you."

The call ended.

Thud... Thud... Thud...
