Chapter 6 - Tethered Hearts

Kayla's POV

My eyes fluttered calmly as I looked at the caller ID.

I picked it up on the second ring.

"Hello, Mrs Reyes.. How do you feel today?.." His voice came through?

"I'm doing fine for now, Doctor Damien, thank you so much." my voice echoed, laced with an appreciative tone.

For now I was fine, but I don't know how I might feel few days to come, when I divorce Liam.

"Alright Mrs Reyes, just wanted to check on you and I hope you start your antenatal soon." He muttered, with so much concern in his voice.

"Yes doctor, thank you so much."

With that, Doctor Damien hung up. Heavy sighs escaped my lungs.

If only he knew what I was going through now. Very soon he'd find out anyway, he was the family doctor, and finding out I was gone after the divorce should be a piece of cake.

But I was grateful he was looking out for me. It was clear now, the only person who cared for me in the Reyes family after Grandma Helen was Damien, even though he wasn't a complete part of the family.

Damien and I were of the same age.

Back then, when I was brought to the Reyes family many years ago, Damien was also with his father at the family's hospital, very young and intelligent, we often played together everytime he came with his Dad to run a test on Grandma Helen, and also when I visited the hospital with Grandma Helenb for her check up, he was always there with his Dad.

Growing up, we became closer as friends and Damien started coming to Grandma Helen's villa frequently to play with me. We kept each other's company till it was time for Damien to travel to New York for his medical studies.

A few months after he travelled, I got married to Liam.

He was shocked when he came back and I told him I was married to Liam. I saw emotions flash through his eyes but I didn't read any meaning to it, of course b there was no meaning to read to it, he was just surprised or maybe hurt that he wasn't available.

But all the same, he was overly happy for me.

"I'm so happy for you Kayla, at least you married the most capable man in Los Angeles."He muttered. But little did he know I had started seeing nightmares in the marriage with the so-called 'capable man'.

My mind drifted off to the days when we used to play together, where Damien always chased me around and I did the same.

Damien had always been a nice person, and I appreciated that he was still the same till today.

He even went as far as respecting me, he no longer called me by name but Mrs Reyes.

Painful smile spread across my lips. Even though my life had been so unfortunate from the beginning, there were still people in my life who cherished me and also gave me love. I might not have felt it was anything then, but now I appreciate it.

As I wheeled my box to the road, I met a taxi on the way and swiftly hopped inside.

"XM" my voice sounded.

I was going to Liam's office.

While in the taxi, my mind was a jumbled mess, from one thought to several others.

A few minutes later, we arrived at Liam's office.

I came down from the taxi, walking into an elevator with my black box and the envelope in my hand.

Determination plastered in my eyes, I was ready now, nothing would hold me back, I would give him the space he so desired.

Not long after, I arrived at Liam's floor.

With my chin up and a frown settled on my forehead, I ascended towards his door, and in a split second, grabbed it open.

I was met with a perplexed look from his secretary.

"Hello, who are you?.." The Young girl maybe in her early twenties muttered, her face inquisitive.

"I'm Kayla.. tell your boss I need to see him now. It's urgent.."

"I don't think that's possible ma'am, he's in a meeting right now.." She muttered professionally.

I felt apologetic towards her as I'd have to ignore her proficient behavior right now. In a swift, I moved past her, beckoned on the door and whipped it open.

The secretary was surprised, she didn't know how I walked past her in such a short period.

"Uhm.. I'm sorry, I'm sorry Sir, she wouldn't listen.. she was just too fast.." her voice stammered.

My gaze was met with Liam where he sat, with Lyra on his lap, while other guys sat opposite them, they were indeed in the middle of a meeting, but with Lyra on his lap?

I felt a pang in my chest. He had never even done so much as smile to me anywhere but here he was showering Lyra with all the love in his heart both in our home and in his office.

My eyes welled up with tears but I braced it up, I wasn't here to cry.

With the secretary still clinging to my arm, Liam nodded at her.

"It's okay, I know her," he muttered to the secretary and she left.

"Liam, I need to speak with you, alone," I muttered, determination in my voice. He noticed it, I saw his hands shake and he balled them into a fist.

Just then, his glaring eyes raised to look at me, disgust on his face.

"Can't you see I'm in the middle of something? You can talk some other time.." He said, brushing me off as if I was a nuisance.

Without saying anything, I tossed the envelope onto his table.

Lyra picked it up immediately and ripped it open, her eyes widening as she saw the word, 'Divorce' boldly written on it.

Liam suddenly hijacked it from her, his eyes squinted and his forehead creased as though he was about to get furious.

"Please let's have this meeting again in the next 30 minutes.." He muttered, dismissing his colleagues.

They stood up and strode out of his office, but Lyra didn't budge.

"Lyra, excuse us please.." Liam muttered.

My heart skipped a beat. For the first time, Liam asked Lyra to excuse us. What had come over him?

"Why? Am I now a stranger in your family? Kayla tell him, y'all can go on with whatever you want to discuss while I'm still here.." She whined.

"Lyra!" Liam's cold voice sounded, making everything in the room including me shook.

Without further resistance, she stood up sluggishly and left.

"And you, are you sure you know what you're doing right now? What's the meaning of this." he asked holding the papers to my face and almost dumping them in my eyes.

"Ehh!" he yelled.

"I might be as stupid and dumb as you always believe, but one thing is for sure right now, I want a divorce."

"What?" He exclaimed, his chest going up and down in fury. Why was he riled, I thought that was what he wanted?

"Yes Liam, you don't need me. The person you need is Lyra and I'm giving you the space to be with her." She voiced.

"You don't know what you're saying, just go back home and wait for me.." He muttered, cutting me off like I was an unserious fellow. When would he ever take anything that had to do with me as important and serious? Anyways, it was over.

"I'm sorry, but you wouldn't find me when you get to your home later, and as for your cards, I left them on your room table, you can have them back."

"What? You don't even have any money, how are you going to survive? If this is a way to get my attention, then just go home, I'm coming, Grandma wouldn't be happy if I left you stranded, at least you have a roof over your head, you're eating and clothing well, and you have money. Be grateful!"

He said, almost yelling.

I bit my lower lip, realizing now what this was all about.

He put a roof over my head, gave me food, clothes, and money and for that, he could go around cheating with his mistress without any remorse.

The tears I had held back since I entered this place finally broke free. This time, it didn't break me, it only made me stronger. I saw who Liam truly was. He wasn't a great guy as I had always fantasized him to be. His head was buried in his fame and money that he thought he could even use it to buy human and toy with her emotions. He was forgetting I didn't throw myself at him for what he had. Grandma had arranged our marriage.

I nodded my head in acceptance. This was it. Nothing could save this marriage.

These tears greatly set a determination inside my heart, I must go for a life that was better than this one.

"Goodbye, Liam." It came out of my mouth in a slow whisper, but loud enough for him to hear.
