Chapter 3 - The First Connection

Cambodia was still awake.

Even though the afternoon was slowly turning toward evening, the streets were alive with movement.

Motorbikes passed through the roads one after another.

Shopkeepers called out to customers.

People moved between small stores and market stalls, carrying bags, food, and drinks.

The smell of freshly cooked food mixed with the warm air of the city.

Among the crowd walked a young woman wearing her college uniform.

Her dark hair moved slightly with the evening breeze as she walked home, her bag hanging from one shoulder.

Her name was Miu.

She was twenty-three years old.

Another day of college had ended.

Another day of lectures.

Another day of assignments.

Another day of listening to people talk about grades, exams, careers, and what they were supposed to do with their lives.

Miu walked quietly through the busy street.

She looked around at the people laughing together.

Friends were eating at small food stalls.

Families were shopping.

Couples were walking beside each other.

Everyone seemed to have somewhere to go.

Everyone seemed to have someone waiting for them.

Miu sighed.

"Hmm..."

She adjusted the strap of her bag.

"Life can be so cruel sometimes."

When you were alone, it felt like nobody really understood you.

Study.

Study.

And study some more.

Wake up.

Go to college.

Attend classes.

Come home.

Study again.

Sleep.

Then repeat everything the next day.

Sometimes Miu wondered whether this was really what life was supposed to be.

"What's the point of studying all day and night if every day feels exactly the same?"

She didn't hate college.

She didn't hate studying.

She simply felt tired.

Tired of the same routine.

Tired of feeling like she was moving forward without knowing where she was actually going.

She continued walking.

The streets around her remained loud and colorful.

For a few seconds, Miu stopped beside a small shop and looked at the busy road.

Then she smiled faintly.

"Maybe tomorrow will be different."

She continued toward home.

Meanwhile, in Nepal...

Mivan was having a completely different kind of problem.

His phone was in his hand.

His Facebook account was open.

And somehow...

His entire Facebook experience had become chaotic.

Mivan stared at his screen.

Then blinked.

Then refreshed the page.

Then stared again.

"What is happening?"

He had recently started using Facebook more seriously.

And today, he had done something very simple.

He had sent a friend request to a Cambodian girl.

That's it.

One friend request.

Nothing special.

At least, that's what he thought.

But after that...

His Facebook seemed to have decided that Mivan was suddenly an expert on Cambodia.

Cambodian-related suggestions began appearing everywhere.

Friend suggestions.

Pages.

Posts.

Profiles.

And, somehow, even more Cambodian girls appeared in his suggested friends list.

Mivan stared at the screen.

"Why are there so many?"

He scrolled.

Another suggestion.

Another.

Another.

He stared at his phone with complete confusion.

"I only sent one request!"

He refreshed again.

It somehow felt even worse.

Mivan laughed.

"Facebook, what are you doing to me?"

He leaned back in his chair.

Then his eyes returned to the profile he had originally found.

The girl's profile picture was unusual.

It was black and white.

She hadn't shown her entire face.

Only a small portion of her chin, lips, and the area below her neck was visible in the photograph.

Mivan couldn't really tell what she looked like.

He had simply noticed that she was Cambodian.

And for some reason, he had become curious.

So...

He sent the request.

Now all he could do was wait.

---

Cambodia

Miu finally reached home.

She opened the door, stepped inside, and placed her bag down.

She was tired.

She wanted to change clothes, drink something, and forget about college for the rest of the evening.

Then she noticed her phone.

A notification.

Miu picked it up.

She looked at the screen.

A Facebook notification.

Friend request.

She opened it.

The profile belonged to a boy.

Miu looked at his profile picture.

She tilted her head slightly.

"Hmm?"

He looked young.

Very young.

She checked his profile again.

"Isn't he much younger than me?"

She wasn't sure.

Maybe he was simply someone who looked younger in photographs.

Miu shrugged.

"What the hell..."

She didn't think much of it.

There was nothing strange about accepting a friend request.

So she tapped:

Accept.

The moment she accepted...

A message appeared.

Hello.

Miu stared at the screen.

She hadn't even had time to put her phone down.

She smiled slightly.

"That was fast."

She opened the message.

The boy had already sent another one.

What's your name?

Miu sat down.

She replied with her name.

Miu.

A few seconds later, another message arrived.

How old are you?

Miu paused.

Then typed:

23.

On the other side of the world, Mivan looked at the number.

His eyes widened.

"Twenty-three?"

He sat there for a moment.

Then looked back at the profile picture.

"Oh."

He suddenly felt like he had accidentally sent a friend request to someone much older than he expected.

Mivan typed his own age.

16.

There was a pause.

Miu looked at the screen.

"Sixteen?"

She looked at his profile picture again.

Now it made sense.

He really did look young.

Miu smiled.

She wasn't expecting anything from the conversation.

Just a random friend request.

A random person from another country.

Nothing more.

Then another message appeared.

Mivan: So you're older than me.

Miu smiled.

Miu: Yeah.

A few seconds passed.

Then:

Mivan: Then I'll call you sister.

Miu stared at the screen.

"...Sister?"

She laughed quietly.

Miu: Okay. 😂

On the other side, Mivan smiled.

Mivan: Sister Miu.

Miu shook her head.

"He's funny."

She placed the phone beside her.

The conversation didn't continue for long.

There were no dramatic confessions.

No endless messages.

No promises.

No idea that this random Facebook request would become important someday.

Just two people who had never met.

A sixteen-year-old boy from Nepal.

And a twenty-three-year-old woman from Cambodia.

Two completely different lives.

Two different countries.

Two different worlds.

And yet, somehow...

A single friend request had connected them.

Mivan looked at the screen again.

His Facebook was still full of Cambodian recommendations.

He laughed.

"One request caused all this?"

He closed the app.

But before putting the phone away, he looked once more at Miu's name.

Miu.

He didn't know it yet.

But this was the beginning of a story he would remember for the rest of his life.

That night, Mivan opened his notebook.

He stared at the blank page for a moment.

Then he wrote:

> Dear Miu,

Today I met someone from Cambodia.

I don't know why I sent that friend request.

Maybe I was just curious.

Maybe it was nothing.

But somehow, I feel like I'll remember this day.

He closed the notebook.

Outside his window, Kathmandu was quiet.

Far away, somewhere under the Cambodian night sky, Miu was also beginning to wonder about the strange boy who had suddenly appeared on her Facebook.

Neither of them knew where this small connection would lead.

For now...

It was simply the first message between two distant worlds.

The chapter/story has ended, but we'll remember it someday from another corner of a new universe.
