Chapter 32 - Dire Wolf

Red returned with four rabbon and threw them in front of the four young goblins, "That's your food!"

The one with the broken teeth glared at him, but immediately cowered when their gazes met. He shrugged and climbed the tree.

What he learned from over a week of experiences hunting in the jungle was that trees were the safest spot for him. He had not met a beast that resided in the tree aside from Marget, which was actually no longer a threat to him. That was why he confidently claimed the massive tree was the safest spot.

He sat at the massive branch, leaning his back against the tree. With his 500 Stamina, he was still far from being tired. His stamina didn't even go lower than four hundred when he checked.

He kept an eye on the four young goblins who feasted upon the rabbon. They drank the blood to quench their thirst, and then finished the rabbon. Even the one with broken teeth finished his share.

The four young goblins were too nervous to eat before leaving. That was why he hunted rabbon for them. After a little over half an hour, Red climbed down.

"Break time is over!"

The four young goblins wanted to complain, wanting more time to rest, but again, the beating truly got into them that they didn't even dare to complain.

"Follow me!"

Red brought them into the jungle instead of following the dirt path. He brought them to the creek he found when he went hunting.

The four young hunters didn't wait for his order as they rushed to the creek and drank. They looked at him in a different light after getting the drink. They looked grateful for the water, even though all he had done was lead them to the creek.

From his perspective, he needed them for something. That was why he wanted to keep them fit, or else they were nothing but a burden.

They returned to the dirt path and continued the journey. As they went further from the tribe, the scenery remained the same, but Red could pick up the difference in atmosphere.

They might have entered a new territory, no longer in the rabbon territory, and Red didn't know anything about what came after the rabbon's territory. He forgot to ask the warrior or even the Matron. If he asked, they had no choice but to give him the information since he was doing a duty for the tribe.

He was worried about the unknown, but it would be safe if the three wounded goblins could reach his tribe alive at night, though one of them died not long after they arrived.

That was another concern. He didn't know what caused their wound, whether the Dire Wolf King or other beasts. He could not hear the questioning, and now he was wondering what caused it.

Another mistake was that he didn't use Appraisal on the wounded goblin. He could measure their strength based on their level, and that would give him information. It was vague information, but it was better than nothing.

Fortunately, the warrior told him what the wolf looked like. It was called Dire Wolf, and their description of the beast was a bigger version of the dire lupus. That was when he realized that the beast he saw yesterday might be a dire wolf. At least, he knew the appearance of his target.

Still, the thought of meeting the horned wolf yesterday still frightened him. It was much stronger than he was, for sure, and he had no chance to kill it. He doubted that he could outrun the beast if it spotted him.

Red clicked his tongue with the thoughts, but he proceeded to follow the dirt path more carefully and more slowly. To his surprise, they didn't encounter any beast for the rest of their journey. They took five rests in total, and they didn't stop for food or drink this time because he wanted to take the trip safely.

He was not going to hunt into the jungle with four level 0 goblins following him. Getting the job done and going back as soon as possible was more important.

They finally arrived in an open clearing area, and fortunately, it was not dark yet. Red hoped this tribe would manage to kill the Dire Wolf King, but he was pessimistic when he saw the billowing smoke that came from the tribe.

Even though he was far from the tribe, he could see the fence and the black smoke coming from beyond that fence. There was a fire, and he still hoped the fire was the tribe that tried to burn the dead bodies instead of the tribe getting wiped out.

"Hide there and wait for me!"

Red pointed at the nearest tree, telling them to hide behind the tree as he planned to check the tribe by himself.

The four young goblins exchanged glances, but they listened to his order. They were dead tired, so they didn't complain about having more rest.

It was good that they didn't make a ruckus about his decision. He walked closer to the fence and walked slowly alongside the fence. His eyes darted around, trying to see any movement. His ears perked up, hoping to pick up any noise that might help him to clear out the situation.

Red could not hear anything that indicated beast movement, but he started to smell something unpleasant. It was similar to the smell of rotten meat, but it was not too strong yet.

He had a bad premonition just from the smell. If the tribe survived, they should get rid of the dead bodies by now instead of letting them go bad.

'I hope they won the fight and didn't have the time to clean the dead bodies yet…'

Red crawled below the fence and snuck into the tribe. He was not going to take the main entrance when the situation looked bad. Not far from the fence, he saw a few bodies getting torn off. The bodies were incomplete.

He saw a hand near her, a body with limbs further, a head, and legs all over the place. One thing was for sure: they all belonged to the goblins, not the wolf. He had not seen a single part of a dire wolf.

He took a deep breath, and his face crunched in disgust because the rotten smell got stronger. He decided to walk behind the building and snuck deeper into the tribe. The goblin's dead bodies were all over the place, and he started to see dead dire wolves' bodies mixed with the goblin's dead bodies.

Red was relieved that at least the goblin could kill the dire wolf, meaning it was possible to kill them. But things got worse because he could not find any living being, not even a live wolf.

He was pretty sure that he was deep enough into the village. If there were a goblin alive, he should be able to find them. He was planning to check on the fire, but changed his mind.

'Maybe they were hiding inside the building?'

With that in mind, Red decided to check on the big house that was near him. He opened the door carefully, trying his best not to make any noise. He succeeded in that, but his action to remain unseen failed.

A dire wolf was currently feasting on a dead goblin, and it raised its head the moment Red fully opened the door. Red stared at the dire wolf as blood dripped from the wolf's mouth. The wolf also stared at him as its mouth slowly opened, starting to let out a growl.
