"Could it be that he really isn't worried about Kotoamatsukami?"
Facing Garp's indifferent attitude, Shisui instead felt a knot tighten in his chest.
He wasn't an idiot.
On the contrary, just from that brief exchange earlier, he had already seen how terrifying Iron Fist was.
Combined with what Fugaku said about his Observation Haki, he now feared Garp to the extreme.
…
Shisui hesitated for a moment, but in the end he clenched his teeth and decided to use his eye technique.
The pride of the Uchiha, his confidence in Kotoamatsukami, and the temptation of defeating a hero of the ninja world and helping his clan and village… all of it made him unable to accept simply conceding.
"Kotoamatsukami? Be my guest."
Garp folded his arms across his chest, standing there with a posture that said 'go ahead.'
"Kotoamatsukami!"
Once he made his decision, Shisui stopped hesitating.
His left eye's black vortex spun sharply, and a tear of blood slid down from the eye that was now webbed with violent blood vessels.
"Be loyal to the Uchiha… Iron Fist!"
Shisui's left eye locked tightly onto Garp.
The ocular jutsu hidden in that eye, Kotoamatsukami, launched without hesitation.
An intense stab of pain shot through his eyeball as a cold, sinister, ominous chakra surged outward, trying to forcefully invade Garp's mind.
However…
At the very moment when this command, "Be loyal to Uchiha…" stabbed into Garp's brain like a malignant parasite, the confidence on Shisui's face instantly collapsed, replaced by a paper-white pallor.
He felt as if he had gathered all his strength… only to slam his head straight into an iron mountain covered in sharp steel spikes.
A violent dizziness and nerve-rending agony burst from his eye, then flooded his entire body like a tidal wave.
"Ahhhh!"
Shisui clutched his eye with one hand and dropped to both knees, a blood-curdling scream ripping from his throat.
The nearby Konoha ninja turned toward him, and were immediately stunned. Even with his hand over his eye, blood was still spraying out between his fingers.
"How can this be?
Mangekyo Sharingan techniques have side effects, yes, but not this much bleeding.
Unless… it's a backlash!"
Fugaku saw the scene and suddenly understood something.
He also had a Mangekyo Sharingan.
He had also used Mangekyo techniques.
He knew exactly how they felt, and while unpleasant, they were absolutely within tolerable limits.
For someone like Shisui to collapse to his knees, screaming nonstop, that was simply impossible.
"My eye… my eye…
Why is this happening?!"
What terrified Fugaku even more was that Shisui's eye just kept bleeding, his half-kneeling form trembling, his screams growing harsher, and then something even more horrifying began happening.
"Lord Garp, I apologize on Shisui's behalf. Let's end today's spar here. Thank you for your guidance, please withdraw whatever technique you used."
Fugaku hurried forward and bowed deeply to Garp, adopting an obedient, humble posture.
Clearly, despite being displeased by Shisui's arrogance and refusal to heed his warnings, he even more did not want the clan's greatest genius, the one who had awakened the Mangekyo, to be crippled here over something like this.
"Kid, you seem to be misunderstanding something. I didn't lay a finger on your clan's brat."
Garp glanced at the kneeling, eye clutching Shisui, then curled his lip.
"Then Shisui… "
"If you want to blame someone, blame that kid for being arrogant and ignoring my advice… insisting on using Mangekyo jutsu on me."
Before Fugaku could finish, Garp cut him off impatiently.
"But… even so, backlash from a Mangekyo jutsu shouldn't be this severe."
Fugaku had awakened his own Mangekyo and had used its techniques, but he knew nothing of Shisui's specific jutsu nor why the situation had become like this.
Even with a strong backlash, someone of Shisui's strength should've been able to endure it.
Why was it getting worse? Why was everything heading toward the outcome Fugaku feared the most?
"Then you should ask that kid what he was trying to do to me just now!"
Garp gave him a meaningful smile.
"Please enlighten me, Lord Garp."
Fugaku's heart tightened, but Shisui's screams still echoed in his ears.
"No need for gratitude. Back in the old days, I saw too much. Anyone who received the Uchiha's gratitude, or had a good relationship with them… rarely met a good end."
Garp waved his hand dismissively.
Having beaten down the Uchiha since the past era, he understood them even better than Tobirama.
A clan where madness was practically a standard trait, with an eye awakening method rooted in extreme trauma and a warped system of family education… their pathology never received restraint, it only worsened.
In short, having a good relationship with the Uchiha was troublesome, they might offer you up as a sacrifice to awaken a Mangekyo.
And even if they didn't, those closest to them often died the most tragic deaths once their eyes awakened.
Having a bad relationship with them wasn't much better.
The whole clan held grudges more tightly than needles.
If an Uchiha decided he didn't like you, he would hate you for life, and he'd use any means, no matter how petty, to get rid of you.
Even over the smallest slight.
