I didn't make it back to the Collin Mansion until the afternoon.
The moment I stepped through the door, Ridley's hands seized my shoulders, his eyes scanning me for signs of harm. "Are you okay?"
I pulled back instinctively from his touch. When I lifted my gaze, concern flooded his features.
The moment transported me back—whenever illness or injury struck me before, Ridley would fuss over every detail with anxious care. I forced myself back to the present and answered, "I'm fine."
Hughes occupied the living room couch, his expression dripping with contempt as he watched me.
What's with this act? She just wants Dad's attention. She wasn't even hurt as badly as Aileen, he was clearly thinking.
"Mom, where were you last night? And why are you in different clothes?" Hughes questioned.
His childish inquiry pulled Ridley's focus to my outfit. Something dark flickered in his expression as he grasped my hand, pulling me toward the stairs. "Come with me."
