Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: DEAD MAN WALKING

Chapter 1: DEAD MAN WALKING

POV: Sam Barton

Sunlight burns through unfamiliar curtains. Sam's eyes snap open to a ceiling he's never seen but somehow recognizes—wooden beams, vintage light fixture, the exact layout from memories that aren't his own. His heart hammers against ribs that feel too young, too small. The last thing he remembers is the screech of brakes, the kid's terrified face, his own body flying through the air as the truck's bumper crushed his spine.

"This isn't a dream."

He sits up too fast. The room spins—hardwood floors, antique furniture, framed photographs of people he's never met but whose faces trigger ghostly memories. His hands are pale, unmarked by the scars from his surgical training. These are seventeen-year-old hands.

"I died." The thought cuts through him like ice. "I died saving that kid, and now I'm... here."

Sam stumbles to the mirror across the room, his reflection stopping him cold. Messy brown hair instead of his past life's black. Green eyes instead of brown. Sharp features instead of soft. This is Sam Barton—the character who never existed in The Vampire Diaries, but whose life now pulses through his consciousness like a second heartbeat.

The dissonance is terrifying. Twenty-two years of medical school, anatomy classes, late nights in the library—all trapped inside a teenager's body with muscle memory of high school hallways and archaeological textbooks. He knows this face, this name, this life of dead parents and absent guardians. But he also knows what this world really is.

"The Vampire Diaries universe." Sam grips the mirror frame. "Stefan Salvatore. Damon. Elena Gilbert. Klaus Mikaelson."

A chill runs down his spine. He knows their stories, their fates, their deaths. Seven years of supernatural chaos that starts with a brooding vampire enrolling in high school and ends with... well. Endings depend on who survives.

A mechanical chime echoes inside his skull.

The interface pulses, waiting. Sam forces himself to breathe. The medical training from his past life kicks in—assess the situation, prioritize immediate needs, create an action plan.

"Okay. I'm not insane. This is real." He touches the wooden dresser, solid beneath his fingers. "The System is some kind of supernatural ability. Clone creation, damage relocation... I'm basically a one-man army in training."

The implications hit him. If he can create clones with unique abilities, if he can redirect fatal damage to them, he might actually survive this universe. But first, he needs to understand his new life.

Sam explores the Barton estate methodically. The house sprawls across three floors, isolated on the outskirts of Mystic Falls. Family photos show him with two adults—Dr. Marcus Barton and Dr. Helen Barton, archaeologists who died in a car crash six months ago. Their absence explains the trust fund, the distant aunt who calls once a month, the isolation.

In the study, Sam finds their real legacy. Journals overflow with sketches of vervain, detailed maps of underground tunnels, references to "the Founder's secret" and "the tomb beneath the church." His breath catches. They knew. They discovered Mystic Falls' supernatural history and died for it.

One entry, dated weeks before their death, makes his blood chill:

"The vervain responds to intention. It grows for those who need protection. We don't understand the mechanism, but something wants guardians in this town. We've found evidence of previous archaeological families dating back to the 1800s. All died young. All left behind detailed supernatural research. As if knowledge itself chooses its carriers."

"They were preparing for something," Sam realizes. "They knew I'd need this information."

He pockets a sprig of vervain from the greenhouse—plants far too mature for their listed planting dates. Another mystery for later.

The phone rings. Sam answers without thinking.

"Samuel?" A woman's voice, tinny through the connection. "It's Aunt Rebecca."

"Right. The absent guardian." Sam forces warmth into his voice.

"Hello, Aunt Rebecca."

"I just wanted to check in before your first day of school tomorrow. Do you have everything you need? The trust fund should cover—"

"I'm fine," Sam interrupts gently.

"Classes start at eight-fifteen. I'll be in town for your graduation, of course, but until then—"

"I understand." Sam keeps it brief. Rebecca Barton prefers distance, managing her nephew's life through phone calls and financial arrangements. It's perfect for his needs.

After hanging up, Sam stares at his reflection in the dark window. Tomorrow, he enters Mystic Falls High. He'll meet Caroline Forbes, Elena Gilbert, Bonnie Bennett—people he knows from a screen, now real and breathing and months away from vampire attacks that will shatter their lives.

"But I can change that." The thought crystallizes into determination. "I have knowledge they don't. I can save them."

He focuses on the System interface, willing it to respond.

[CREATE FIRST CLONE? Y/N]

Sam hesitates. The clone will be sentient, independent, with his memories but potentially different personality quirks. If it dies, he loses its affinity permanently unless he's saved it to a protected slot. This choice matters.

"I need information first. Test the waters."

[Y]

Shadows writhe in the corner of the room, solidifying into human form. The process drains 50 MP from his pool, leaving him momentarily dizzy. When his vision clears, he's looking at himself—identical in every way except for the slight gleam of excitement in the clone's eyes.

[CLONE 1 CREATED SUCCESSFULLY]

[AFFINITY ASSIGNED: ENHANCED SPEED (RARE)]

[MASTERY LEVEL: NOVICE (0%)]

[CLONE PERSONALITY QUIRK: HYPERACTIVE/THRILL-SEEKING]

The clone grins.

"This is mental," it says in Sam's exact voice, bouncing on the balls of its feet. "I can feel it—like electricity in my muscles. Want to test the speed limits?"

"It's me, but not me." Sam studies his duplicate. Same memories, same knowledge, but the underlying energy is different. Eager. Reckless.

"No testing until we understand the mechanics better."

The clone's face falls.

"But—"

"No." Sam's voice carries authority he didn't know he possessed. "You're not disposable. If you die, I lose Enhanced Speed permanently."

That sobers the clone. It nods reluctantly.

"Fair point. So what's the plan?"

Sam looks out the window at Mystic Falls—a small town that doesn't know it's about to become ground zero for supernatural warfare. In the distance, he can see the spires of the high school where tomorrow he'll begin building the alliances that might save everyone.

"First, we integrate. Make friends. Build trust." He pulls out the vervain sprig. "Second, we distribute protection. Vervain tea, jewelry, anything to prevent compulsion."

"And third?"

Sam's reflection stares back from the darkened glass—a seventeen-year-old boy with twenty-two years of medical knowledge and seven years of supernatural plot awareness.

"Third, we wait for Stefan Salvatore to arrive. And when he does, we make sure this time, everyone survives."

[QUEST PROGRESS: CLONE CREATED (1/3 OBJECTIVES COMPLETE)]

[EXP GAINED: +50]

[CURRENT EXP: 50/150 TO LEVEL 2]

The clone settles by the window, vibrating with barely contained energy.

"How long until the vampires show up?"

Sam checks the calendar on his phone. September 3rd, 2009. School starts tomorrow. Stefan arrives... soon.

"A few days. Maybe a week."

"And you're sure about all this? The supernatural stuff, the plot, the—"

"I watched them die," Sam interrupts quietly. "Again and again. Different timelines, different choices, but always... loss." His fists clench. "Not this time. This time, we save them all."

The clone nods, understanding flooding its expression. They may be two separate beings now, but they share the same core drive: protect the people they care about, even if those people don't know they need protecting yet.

Sam collapses into bed at midnight, emotionally drained. Tomorrow brings his first day at Mystic Falls High—a delicate balance of acting normal while positioning himself to change everything.

The clone takes up guard duty by the window, a silent sentinel watching the quiet town. In the distance, lights twinkle from houses where Elena Gilbert grieves her parents, where Caroline Forbes triple-checks her schedule for tomorrow, where Bonnie Bennett tries to ignore the strange dreams that have been plaguing her sleep.

None of them know that their world is about to crack open. But Sam Barton—formerly a medical student, now a teenage guardian with a System and a clone—plans to be ready when it does.
