"What exactly is going on here?"
The deep, authoritative voice cut through the room like a blade. Everyone scrambled to their feet in a blind panic. I felt my heart drop into my stomach.
Leon was standing in the doorway, his gaze moving slowly across the room, settling on his partner seated, encircled by staff, and far from looking like the master of the house.
He had warned me before about maintaining my distance and respecting my new position, and here I was, caught acting like the help again. He looked straight into my eyes, his expression cold.
The silence that followed was suffocating. Lan and the other maids were trembling, their heads bowed so low they were practically looking at their shoes. They scrambled into a straight line, the joy of the story session replaced by sheer terror.
"Mr. President," Lan stammered, his voice shaking. "We... we were just—"
