Chapter 19 - [19] Master Craftsman

"Cut them just the way I showed you how. Make sure it's smooth, or the ride will be bumpy." Eliron said, handing over the marked wood to Ash.

He nodded firmly and took it from Eliron's arms. "I'll do my best, my lord."

'Since Ash is working on the wheels, I should start working on the suspension system….'

It would have been better if he had someone else to do the basics, that way, he could work on the body of the carriage.

But there was no free person around so Eliron had to do it himself.

The type of suspension he was trying to build, was not as complex as what was used in the modern era, instead it was a simplified version of it, a design he had thought up himself.

It would be a dual suspension unit, two of them for each wheel, attached to the main body of the carriage, then merged together before connecting to the axle.

This way, the weight would not cause the springs to snap under pressure.

For springs, they would melt one of the lower grade swords and fashion it into a pole, before twisting it with magic.

And then a tough animal hide would serve as a cushion inside it.

Eliron grabbed some wood and a small knife. He was about to start carving out the parts when a shadow was suddenly cast over him, reducing his visibility.

"Aren't you supposed to be meditating?" He muttered while looking at the wood.

Yennefer frowned and bent down to meet his gaze. "Well… it's hard to meditate on an empty stomach."

Eliron began sketching out the first part he was to cut out of the wood.

"Dinner is a long way off, and Artie is not here to give you mystery mushrooms. How are you going to survive?" He said in a mocking tone.

Her eyes narrowed slightly as she stared at Eliron without saying a word, hoping her silence would show just how dire her situation was.

But Eliron said nothing, he simply continued making strokes on the wood.

"I know Artie gives you an extra portion of food she hunts herself!" She screamed, tears welling up in her eyes. "Don't be stingy!"

Eliron smirked.

"You aren't even denying it!" Yennefer fumed. "Angels die if they're not fed in the mortal realm, you know?"

Her voice was low this time and pleading but still, Eliron remained silent, the scratching sound of charcoal and wood reaching her ears.

"Come on, just give me a tiny, tiny little bit. I promise I'll never bother you again..."

"…"

"Pretty please, I'll do anything you ask, just let me taste that meat!"

Eliron suddenly stopped and looked up from the wood, a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "Did you say anything?"

A few minutes later…

Yennefer was happily munching on strips of dried meat, as she stared at the work Eliron had given her.

"Shoo I have to carve all these?" She asked, holding the dried meat with both hands and nibbling it slowly.

"Yes, and be quick, I need them by tomorrow, do a good job and I'll have more meat ready for you, okay?"

Yennefer's face brightened as she saluted. "Yes sir!"

Eliron left her to her job then walked over to where the planks were kept.

'I need to finish this fast…'

With the hunting operation just by the corner, he wanted to at least accomplish this before then.

'Thankfully I don't have to wait for the wood to dry…'

Because of the special nature of the trees in the elven forest, they maintained their shape and structure even after drying. The only thing the wood would lose is weight.

But still, if he was to continue the way he was going, it would take about five days to complete the wagon.

Three extra days he did not wish to spend on it.

"There has to be a faster way…"

He stood there for a few seconds, thinking about a more efficient way, when it clicked in his mind.

Eliron mentally summoned the primordial collection, and moved over to the search bar.

There was something that could potentially be helpful, a passing conversation the main character had with his sword smith.

Back then, it just felt like filler content to deepen their relationship, who would have known it would be so helpful?

He quickly typed on the words, 'Dwarf hand' into the search bar and clicked enter.

It was not the exact name, but he could swear it was something close to it.

Seconds later a long line of skills appeared, each of them related to the topic in one way or the other.

Eliron quickly filtered through them, his eye moving through the screen until he found what he was looking for.

— Dwarf's Thumb (SSS)

Description: A renounced craftsman once received an impossible task from the supreme king.

Build me a carriage the size of a house, with wheels that could crush trees and an interior befitting of a king. You have one month.

The cost of failure? The lives of his family.

So Dagon worked for countless days without moving, sleeping or eating. And in the fourth week, he had awakened a skill. The Dwarf's thumb.

But alas, he had run out of time.

Skill description:

Eliron's smile widened as he read through the skills, then he lifted his hammer.

His eyes glowed a bright amber colour, and sparkling yellow energy began to emanate from his body as he watched the old.

He felt like an entirely new person, multiple ideas flowing into his mind simply from looking at the wood.

"Let's begin…"

The carriage construction went on smoothly. As long as there was meat, Yennefer worked without resting, and although Ash was not very talented at it, he was still helpful.

But the most important factor was [Dwarf's thumb]. With the help of this skill, by the end of the second day, the cart was complete.

Since the cart was done, Ash left the forest earlier to organize the night guards, leaving Yennefer and Eliron in the forest.

They both stood next to the cart, admiring their work.

It was an absolute beast on wheels! It had a reinforced body, double wheels making a total of eight, and a nice pattern etched onto the surface.

"Wow…" Yennefer said as she chewed on some meat. "You really did it…"

Eliron smirked proudly and tossed the axe into the carriage, the metal ringing as it met the wood arranged at the back.

He was soaked in sweat, and his mana was running low from having used the skill for one hour without resting.

But at least, they were finally done.

"Alright Yen, let's give it a test run."

The horse had already been brought prior, and he had already loaded some wood in the back.

Yennefer shook her head. "You are making two trips right? I'll come on the second one. I still have some stuff to do."

"Didn't you say that meditation drains you of mana? You've already done it for a long time today, you should rest."

She smiled faintly. "I'm trying to create a new spell, I can still go for another few minutes."

Seeing her determination, Eliron decided to leave her be. It would be hypocritical to force her to stop when if he was the one he would have done far worse.

He shrugged. "Alright then, don't get into any trouble while I'm away, I'll be back soon."

He was concerned about the monsters in the forest, but it was still early in the evening, and besides, never had a monster once appeared since they began work here.

Yennefer waved him goodbye and Eliron got in the carriage seat, while she returned to her spot underneath the tree.

Eliron stole one last glance at her, before he pulled the reins, causing the horse to move.

The farther they went, the more impressed Eliron was with the carriage.

Not only were the suspension doing their job, they were performing excellently!

Obviously, due to the rough terrain, the ride was not the smoothest, but it was far better than any regular cart or carriage.

He was smiling ear to ear, enjoying the forest breeze, when he suddenly heard a blood curdling scream, that froze him in his steps.

Eliron immediately turned, his expression grim as his fingers tightened on the reins.

"Yennefer?!?!"
