Chapter 63 - Not Official, But Not Nothing

-AURORA ACADEMY, SAPPORO, HOKKAIDO-

-7:42 AM, DECEMBER 23, 2016-

The morning felt different.

Not because the snow had stopped.

Not because the sky was clearer.

But because two people walked into school carrying something new between them.

Something fragile.

Something unnamed.

Ichika stepped through the front gates with her usual elegance — posture straight, expression composed. But today, there was the faintest softness at the corner of her lips.

Rikuu arrived a few minutes later.

Hands in his pockets.

Face neutral.

But when his eyes found her across the courtyard —

He didn't look away.

It was small.

Almost unnoticeable.

But it was there.

And that was enough.

-HALLWAY, SECOND FLOOR-

-8:05 AM-

They ended up walking beside each other without planning to.

Not touching.

Not talking much.

Just… matching pace.

"…So," Rikuu muttered quietly, keeping his eyes forward, "about yesterday."

Ichika's heart skipped.

"Yes?"

He cleared his throat.

"You don't have to tell anyone."

She blinked. "I wasn't planning to."

"Good."

A pause.

Then—

"But we're not pretending it didn't happen either," she added gently.

Rikuu glanced at her.

"…No."

That word carried weight.

No denial.

No retreat.

Just acceptance.

Students passed by them, unaware of the subtle shift in the air.

Ichika hesitated before speaking again.

"So… what are we?"

Rikuu stiffened slightly.

"I don't know."

She nodded thoughtfully. "That's fair."

"…You're not upset?"

"Should I be?"

He shook his head quickly. "No. I just thought—"

"I don't need a label today," she said softly. "I just need honesty."

He stopped walking.

She turned to face him.

The hallway buzzed faintly with distant classroom noise.

"…Then," Rikuu said carefully, "I like you. And I don't want to ignore that."

Her expression warmed.

"And I like you," she replied, "and I don't want to rush you."

Something in his shoulders eased.

"…So we're not official," he said.

"But we're not nothing," she finished.

He nodded once.

"Yeah."

Not official.

But not nothing.

-ROOFTOP-

-LUNCHTIME-

They sat beside each other, backs against the fence.

A careful space between them.

Not cold.

Just cautious.

Ichika unwrapped her lunch.

Rikuu watched her for a moment.

"You're really calm about this," he said.

She looked at him curiously. "About liking you?"

"…Yeah."

She thought about it.

"I was more afraid before I said it."

"And now?"

She met his eyes.

"Now I'm relieved."

He looked away quickly.

"…You're too straightforward."

Ichika smiled faintly. "You're not used to that."

He exhaled through his nose.

Silence settled again.

But it was different now.

Easier.

After a moment, Ichika spoke quietly.

"Can I ask something?"

"Depends."

"Can I hold your hand?"

Rikuu nearly choked on air.

"What?!"

Her expression remained innocent. "Just to see."

"To see what?"

"If it feels strange."

His ears turned red.

"You can't just ask that so casually."

"I thought honesty was important."

He stared at her.

She didn't look embarrassed.

She didn't look playful.

She looked sincere.

That made it worse.

"…You're unbelievable," he muttered.

But after a few seconds—

Very slowly—

He shifted his hand slightly closer.

Not fully reaching.

Just… there.

Ichika noticed.

Her fingers brushed against his.

Light.

Careful.

Testing.

Neither pulled away.

The contact was small.

Barely there.

But it sent warmth rushing through both of them like something far larger.

Rikuu swallowed.

"…Does it feel strange?"

Ichika shook her head softly.

"No."

He tightened his fingers just slightly.

"…Yeah," he admitted. "Me neither."

Snow reflected bright winter light around them.

Cold air.

Warm hands.

And for the first time—

This wasn't just tension.

This wasn't just longing.

This was the beginning.

Not official.

But not nothing.

And slowly—

Fire was learning how to stay.
