Chapter 31 - The Comfort of Repitition

-SCHOOL COURTYARD, AURORA ACADEMY OF EXCELLENCE, SAPPORO, HOKKAIDO, JAPAN-

-7:56 AM, NOVEMBER 22, 2016-

Morning returned to Aurora Academy in familiar patterns.

Students crossed the courtyard in steady lines, shoes crunching softly against frost-kissed stone. The air was cold, but calm—predictable in the way Ichika Komori had come to appreciate.

She slowed near the garden railing.

Rikuu Arakawa was already there.

Leaning against the same low wall as before. Hands in his pockets. Eyes lifted to the pale sky like he was counting seconds rather than clouds.

She didn't hesitate this time.

"Good morning," Ichika said.

Rikuu turned. "…Morning."

No surprise. No distance.

They stood side by side, not looking at each other.

"Did rehearsal lines stick?" she asked.

"Enough," he replied. "You?"

She nodded. "I kept hearing them even after I closed the script."

"…Yeah," he said quietly. "That happens."

The bell rang.

"I'll see you later," Ichika said.

Rikuu glanced at her. "Theatre."

She smiled. "Theatre."

They parted without rushing.

-4:03 PM, NOVEMBER 22, 2016-

Rehearsal unfolded without incident.

No improvised lines. No lingering silences.

Just practice.

Ichika read with more steadiness now, her voice sure even in pauses. Rikuu listened the way he always did—fully, as if each word mattered.

During a short break, Ichika sat on the edge of the stage, flipping through her script.

Rikuu stood nearby. "You don't fidget anymore."

She looked up. "Is that good?"

"It means you're comfortable," he said. "Or pretending really well."

She smiled. "Maybe both."

He considered that. "…Fair."

They resumed without being told.

When rehearsal ended, they walked out together, steps naturally aligned.

"Same time tomorrow?" Ichika asked.

Rikuu nodded. "Yeah."

She hesitated, then added, "I like that it's… normal."

He glanced at her. "Me too."

They stopped at the hallway split.

No pause this time. No uncertainty.

Just routine.

And somehow, that made the quiet feel warmer than anything dramatic ever could.
