The game "YGGDRASIL" was completely different from games in the traditional sense. Its death penalty was extremely harsh: upon death, a player would immediately lose five levels, and if their level was too low, their account would be deleted.
If one wanted to reduce the cost,
they had to either cast resurrection-type magic or carry resurrection items and cash items such as resurrection rings, resurrection staves, and so on.
Aaron had none of these resurrection items.
And he suspected that even with his innate ability of "Player," there would be no such thing as automatic resurrection after death.
After all,
this was a real other world, not a game.
He could not afford to be careless!
While gnawing on the hardened black bread, Aaron reached for his waist, where the short sword he had bought with a silver coin hung.
Without a magic like "Appraise Item," there was no way to obtain information on the short sword in his hand.
However, even without that spell,
Aaron knew very well that the short sword in his hand was an utterly ordinary weapon, with absolutely no stat bonuses.
The reason he bought this weapon, aside from self-defense, was mainly because when he touched it, he learned how to activate a class!
Vmm—
"Contact with weapon: Short Sword. Basic class information obtained: Warrior."
"Change class to this job?"
Aaron raised the short sword in front of himself. After waiting a moment, a message appeared on the status panel before his eyes.
"No."
Aaron immediately muttered in his heart.
The class-change prompt vanished from the status panel. This was clearly not the first time it had appeared; it had already come up once when he purchased the sword.
Counting this time, Aaron had already refused twice in a row.
He had discovered that by touching a corresponding weapon for a period of time, he could trigger prompts for related classes. Back in the weapon shop, he had touched a special shield.
That had triggered an intermediate class called "Black Guard," but he had been unable to change to it. To obtain that class, he first needed the basic class "Guardian."
This had excited Aaron so much that, under the shopkeeper's murderous gaze, he touched every weapon he could get his hands on.
Unfortunately, aside from that shield, all he could unlock were prompts for the basic class "Warrior."
In the game Overlord was based on, classes were divided into three tiers:
Basic classes (15 levels)
Intermediate classes (10 levels)
High-tier/Special classes (5 levels)
Each of these three tiers of classes could only be leveled up to their respective maximum.
In "YGGDRASIL," the total number of classes exceeded two thousand, forming an incredibly vast class system.
As long as it was not done deliberately, it was almost impossible for two players to end up exactly the same.
After discovering, while buying the short sword, that he could take on a class, Aaron had yet to change classes up to now because he understood one very clear point.
Level 100—
That was the cap.
And every basic class took up 15 levels of space. If he wanted to contend with the beings in the Great Tomb, a pure warrior build or pure caster build would clearly not work and would be too easy to hard-counter.
In other words—
If Aaron wanted to avoid glaring weaknesses, he would at the very least need one basic warrior class and one basic caster class.
And those two basic classes combined would already take up 30 levels, greatly reducing the remaining 70 levels of choice.
He had to be extremely cautious.
If he made a mistake in his class build…
The room for trial and error was far too small, so Aaron had no choice but to be careful!
Chewing the black bread dry,
Aaron frowned slightly as he sat on the ground with his head half lowered, a contemplative look flashing continuously in his eyes.
As for his choice of basic classes,
he currently had no real ideas—or rather, he did not dare make a decision.
If there were no threat from the Great Tomb and he only had to deal with the natives of this other world, he would not need to be this conflicted.
The only beings in this world that could truly be called threats were those True Dragon Lords.
In fact,
if Aaron wanted to reach level 100 in a short time, there were indeed roundabout ways.
In "YGGDRASIL," one did not necessarily have to max out a given class. If a player changed into 100 different classes, their level would directly reach 100.
It was just that such a level 100 would be extremely weak and practically worthless.
Ever since Aaron learned yesterday what kind of world he had transmigrated into, he had been racking his brains on how to narrow the power gap if he ended up opposing the Great Tomb of Nazarick.
After thinking it over, it boiled down to two points:
Make use of techniques unique to the other world that did not exist in the Overlord game.
For example: martial arts, the Re-Estize Kingdom's national treasures "Razor Edge," "Origin Ring," and so on.
He had to obtain special classes.
Special classes were stronger than high-tier classes, and they came with powerful special skills or effects whose strength could even surpass super-tier magic.
Only by possessing special classes
did Aaron feel he would at least have the basic qualifications to face the Floor Guardians of the Great Tomb of Nazarick one-on-one.
Tap, tap—
Footsteps emerged from the flow of people on the street and stopped in front of Aaron, who was crouching by the wall, head down in thought, looking as if he were troubled by something.
A shadow blocked out the sweltering sunlight.
Sensing a hint of coolness,
Aaron snapped back to himself first. Seeing the shadow on the ground, his heart tightened. He tried to keep his face expressionless as he looked up at the figure before him.
It was a boy.
He had short golden hair, with bangs hanging down almost to his eyes, giving him a bit of a mushroom-cut look. The first impression he gave was of someone with a rather gentle, even timid personality.
He was not very old.
His clothes were also quite plain, but the material was much better than the few-copper rags Aaron was wearing.
Looking at the blond boy who had appeared before him, Aaron was momentarily stunned, a hint of surprise flashing through his dark brown eyes.
Nfirea?
The one who would in the future be known as a "genius alchemist," one of the very few humans even Ainz himself greatly valued.
Although his current appearance was somewhat different from how he looked at the start of the story, his overall features had not changed much. So recognizing him was not difficult.
"Hello, are you having some kind of trouble?"
Nfirea asked softly with a bit of shyness, but his tone was very sincere.
Trouble?
That question stunned Aaron for a moment.
Looking at the half-eaten rye bread in his hand, the way he was crouched in the corner, and the aura of dejection he gave off,
Aaron more or less understood.
Seriously?
I'm being pitied here!
The corner of Aaron's mouth twitched as he replied with a blank expression, "No."
"What are you doing, Nfirea?" Just then, a cold voice came from behind.
A little old woman, only about one and a half meters tall, with pale hair wrapped in a green headscarf and an unremarkable appearance, walked over with an indifferent expression.
Hearing this little old woman call the blond, mushroom-headed boy by name,
"So it really is Nfirea."
Aaron thought silently.
If there had been any doubt before, now he could be almost completely certain.
Aaron subconsciously took another look at Nfirea.
This was a true talent.
He possessed the dual variant classes "Alchemist (Genius)" and "Apothecary (Genius)."
These were class variants unique to this other world, and could be considered a kind of innate or natural talent.
Classes marked with "(Genius)" allowed a person to learn more skills from that class, acquire related skills beyond their level range, and increase the power and potency of those skills.
In just a few years, Nfirea had used local herbs to create the legendary God's Blood of the other world—the low-tier red potion from the game.
The Great Tomb had plenty of potions of that level, but no matter how large the stockpile, it would eventually run out. The fact that Nfirea could produce them made it no surprise that Ainz took an interest in him.
Besides that,
Nfirea also possessed the innate ability "Unlimited Use of Items"!
This ability allowed him to use any item whatsoever, including magic scrolls, weapons, and race-restricted items that did not match his class.
He could even equip and use guild weapons that only guild members were supposed to handle!
Thinking this, Aaron took a deep breath in his heart. Such a talent was truly a "high-quality human" in this other world.
To a certain extent, Nfirea could even pose a threat to the Great Tomb.
