Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: The Crucial Mind Stone

The high tech synthetic glass went straight through under Pendragon's strike.

Then it awkwardly failed to shatter and just ended up with a neat hole in it.

Pendragon, quick on the uptake, followed up with a solid kick to the glass.

Bang.

With an eardrum piercing crack of compressed air, the entire glass wall blasted out like an artillery shell and plowed a long trench through the forest outside the royal palace.

"???"

"!!!"

"???"

Everyone in the room stared in shock at the beautiful boy who had suddenly exploded with that kind of power.

How did such a slim body contain that much strength? Did he have a Hulk living inside him too?

"So… I am going to run now."

Pendragon realized he had probably shown a little too much, forced himself to finish the last bit of his terrible acting, and jumped straight out of the high rise.

Princess Shuri snapped out of it and rushed to the breached window. As expected, there was no trace of the handsome figure below.

"The Mind Stone is real."

Facing Shuri's questioning look, Vision, as the stone's previous owner, gave his verdict with the weight of authority.

Boom.

Thunder split cloud and stone as blinding lightning crashed down. Thor, newly armed, arrived on the battlefield in a flash of magic faster than any ship, hurling bolts of deep blue lightning.

"Thanos!"

Shouting the big boss's name, his boundless fury turned into storm and thunder, mowing down enemy troops in swathes.

Pendragon gave the God of Special Effects a glance, then shifted his focus to Vision, who was still holding the Mind Stone.

Right now Vision was like a huge, bleeding fish in the middle of the ocean, drawing every shark in from miles around.

Maybe because the commander who had gone to seize the Stone had dropped off the grid, Proxima Midnight was getting nervous. Every remaining grunt that could still move was ordered to abandon tying up other heroes and throw themselves into the push for the Mind Stone at all costs.

Through all of this, Pendragon maintained his perfect stealth. Behind him the ground was carpeted with alien juice.

By now, every last soldier in Thanos's Wakandan army had been buried.

"Presence Concealment, Presence Concealment."

The battle on Titan was already over. Thanos had taken the Time Stone and warped to Earth.

As a top class Assassin, Pendragon had already erased every lesser enemy piece on the board.

When the Mad Titan finally strode into view, the Avengers did not have time to overthink. They all charged the being who intended to erase half the life in the universe, trying to buy Scarlet Witch the time she needed to destroy the Mind Stone.

But against Thanos wielding the power of five Stones, no hero, no matter how strong, could really stand in his way.

Black Panther, War Machine, Groot, the Winter Soldier…

Aside from Captain America trading a couple of blows with the Titan, everyone else was swatted down by the power of the Stones in a single sweep of his hand.

It was as easy as Pendragon sneaking into Thanos's army.

Even so, Scarlet Witch still managed to destroy the Mind Stone in the end, because Thor, axe in hand, pinned Thanos down.

By the time the idealistic Titan finally found a chance to fling the troublesome god of thunder deep into space, the Mind Stone had already exploded in a flare of energy and been completely obliterated.

But, just like in the movie, Thanos swatted aside Wanda and Vision, then used the Time Stone's power to rewind everything and restore the Mind Stone.

"Now it is my cue."

Honestly, claiming he was not nervous would have been a lie. Pendragon had only recently gotten his own power, and his first real opponent was a villain on the level of "destroy half the universe." This was Thanos.

The top ranked assassin stepped into the target's line of sight and calmly looked at him.

Now that he had finally gathered all six Infinity Stones, Thanos did not have much attention to spare for one scrawny little shrimp. He was busy fixing the last yellow gem into his gauntlet, completing the ultimate artifact and claiming the infinite power within.

Ding.

The gauntlet's pull locked the yellow Stone firmly onto the back of his hand. With all six Stones in place, their powers resonated, merging into one and forming the supreme force of this universe.

The Titan's massive frame trembled with the tide of energy. He threw his head back and roared.

Steve Rogers, face smeared with dirt and blood, tried to push himself up again. Black Panther strained with everything he had and barely managed to twitch a finger. Falcon's face was twisted even in unconsciousness, clearly unable to find even a moment's peace in his dreams.

Black Widow, Vision, Scarlet Witch, War Machine, Winter Soldier, Groot… everyone fought just to make their bodies move.

Despair and frustration, fear and rage. None of them could quite grasp what was about to happen, but whether out of lofty ideals or simple survival instinct, every last one of them had to fight, and could only fight, to stop it.

Pendragon, his ahoge whipping from side to side with his nerves, had no time to appreciate this live action facial expression contest. It felt like, without quite meaning to, he had picked up the hopes of everyone still breathing here.

Under the burning weight of all those wide, round eyes on his back, Pendragon stared unblinking at the Titan who was about to claim infinite power, not daring to let his focus wander for even a second.

"No way. How is this going so smoothly for him? Did…"

As the doubt bubbled in his chest, Thanos finally, under Pendragon's silent expectations, crashed.

Crack.

The Mind Stone set into the back of the Infinity Gauntlet could not withstand the force pouring through it. It suddenly shattered, bursting into a cloud of sparkling dust.

The shockwave from the explosion was not strong, barely enough to puff Pendragon's single ponytail out behind him, but the impact on everyone watching was no less than a nuclear blast.

"What?"

Halfway up, Steve either relaxed or panicked, his arms giving out so that he flopped back onto the ground.

Had Banner fed them bad intel? Was there never any "snap" mechanic in the first place?

It was not just the Marvel heroes thinking that. Even Thanos himself was stunned. This had to be the wrong script.

The instant the Mind Stone exploded, even a Titan with willpower like forged iron could not keep his focus completely intact. A single flicker of blankness crossed his consciousness, just for a heartbeat.

Boom.

A silent shockwave rippled out across the mental plane.

Thanos, towering like a mountain, shuddered violently. His body might as well have dropped dead. All awareness of the outside world vanished. He froze in place.

Pendragon unleashed the Force he commanded in a surprise strike, hammering Thanos's psyche. The Titan's mental world shook, on the verge of total collapse.

In the end, he could only say Thanos lived up to his reputation. Even with his mind taking that kind of devastating hit, he still managed to claw his way back with a will harder than steel and emerge even stronger than before.
