Riley was shocked by his question. She did not expect that, not in the state he was in. She had prepared herself for harsh words, maybe anger, but not an invitation that felt like he was pulling her closer even while trapped in that red room filled with danger and secrets.
She turned to answer him, but her words died in her throat when she saw how pale he looked. He was exhausted, his strength almost gone. Alistair swayed, and before she could think, she rushed forward and caught him. They almost fell together when Mr. Titus ran toward them.
"Mr. Blackwood," he called out, holding him by his right side. With effort, he helped Alistair stand properly again. "I will take him to his room."
"Let me help," Riley said quickly, but they were already moving. She bent down to pick up her purse and followed behind them.
