Chapter 27 - Mortea

"You will have to die."

The words didn't echo. They didn't need to. They settled.

Rebecca stayed quiet. She didn't panic. She didn't argue. She just stood there, eyes low, breathing slow, like she was counting something only she could see.

Alex was the first to speak.

"It makes sense," he said. "The living don't belong to death. You can't fully command something you don't belong to."

Mor'vyre nodded once. "Exactly. That is why necromancers fail. They don't raise the dead. They borrow leftovers. Husks. Noise. Even so-called death gods are just wardens inside their own cages. Outside their worlds, they are nothing."

He looked at Rebecca.

"But you are not a warden. You are the definition. And right now, you are alive. Warm. Breathing. You might as well be Life pretending to wear Death's coat."

Rebecca clenched her jaw.

"So I have to die again," she said.

"Yes."

She laughed once, short and dry. "Figures."

Mor'vyre tilted his head. "You already did it once. This time will be cleaner."

Silence sat between them.

Then her system lit up.

[He is right.]

Rebecca didn't blink.

[You are the Absolute Being of Death.]

The words felt heavier than anything she had ever heard.

[You are not an avatar. You are not a carrier. You are Death itself.]

Her fingers curled.

[Death is finality. Death is absence of continuation. Death is not warm.]

The next lines came slower.

[You are alive.]

[That is a contradiction.]

Rebecca swallowed.

[To awaken your absolute authority, you must die.]

Then the system hesitated, just for a moment.

[There is something else.]

Her eyes narrowed.

[There are natural orders. Ranks, even among Absolutes.]

Alex stiffened slightly. He could feel the shift even without seeing the words.

[Absolutes cannot overpower one another.]

[Except two.]

Rebecca's breath slowed.

[Existence.]

[And Nonexistence.]

Mor'vyre frowned. He could tell something had changed but didn't know what.

[Calling the others Absolute is already generous.]

[Nonexistence came first.]

[Existence followed.]

[Then came the rest.]

[Space. Time. Matter/Energy. Life. Death. Order. Chaos. Infinity. Creation.]

Rebecca lifted her head.

[To Existence, you are children.]

[To Existence, Nonexistence is an older sibling.]

[You will never control Order.]

The system stopped.

Rebecca looked straight at Mor'vyre.

"You don't even know everything," she said.

Mor'vyre blinked. "What?"

Alex raised a hand. "Don't."

Mor'vyre studied Rebecca for a second, then smiled faintly. "Doesn't matter. What matters is choice."

Rebecca nodded slowly.

She didn't argue. She didn't hesitate anymore.

"I'm ready," she said. "I'll do it now."

Alex turned sharply. "Now?"

"Yes."

Mor'vyre shrugged. "Then do it."

Rebecca frowned. "That's it?"

"No ritual," he said. "No spell. No stage. No witnesses. Death doesn't need permission."

She stared at him.

"Just die."

Alex stepped forward. "Wait—"

Rebecca raised a hand.

"I've already decided."

She reached into her jacket.

Alex's eyes widened. "Rebecca—"

She pulled out the small blade she always carried. The same one she used when she didn't want noise.

She looked at Alex.

"Tell him I didn't hesitate."

Alex's throat tightened. "You don't have to—"

She smiled.

"I do."

She turned the blade inward.

No speech. No screaming.

She drove it straight into her heart.

Her body dropped.

The world didn't shake.

Nothing exploded.

There was no light.

Rebecca died.

For a fraction of a moment, there was nothing.

Then the system spoke again.

[TITLE REMOVED: Avatar of the Death God]

[TITLE ACQUIRED]

[ABSOLUTE BEING OF DEATH]

The name changed.

The weight changed.

The meaning changed.

Rebecca opened her eyes.

She didn't breathe.

She didn't need to.

Her body stood up on its own.

Alex stumbled back.

Mor'vyre froze.

Rebecca looked down at her hands.

They weren't cold.

They weren't warm.

They were final.

Her system unfolded fully.

Alex stared at her like he was seeing her for the first time.

She looked at Mor'vyre.

"You said you wanted to swear fealty."

Mor'vyre swallowed. "Yes."

She stepped closer.

"Say it again."

"I swear," he said, voice steady but quiet, "my undying fealty to Death."

She nodded once.

"Good."

She turned toward the horizon.

Somewhere far away, something screamed without sound.

Somewhere else, Adam felt it.

And for the first time since the universe learned how to fear,

Death had fully arrived.
