Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Quiet Town

Part 1

The morning air was cool and still, carrying the faint scent of wet earth and jasmine from the gardens that lined the Verden estate. Liana Verden stood by the tall, arched window of her bedroom, gazing at the quiet town beyond the stone walls. It was the kind of town where everyone knew everyone, yet behind its serene streets hid unspoken rules, expectations, and a delicate balance of appearances.

She traced her finger along the condensation on the glass, feeling the weight of the day ahead. Another morning, another series of polite smiles, carefully measured words, and the constant reminder that she was supposed to be someone she did not quite recognize.

"Liana!" a sharp voice called from downstairs. Her mother's tone was polite but carried the unmistakable edge of command. "Come down. Breakfast is ready."

Liana sighed, pushing back a stray strand of hair. "Yes, Mother," she murmured, straightening her back as if practicing the posture of obedience.

As she descended the grand staircase, the sunlight poured across the polished wooden steps, glinting off the crystal chandeliers above. The household was waking slowly — servants bustling quietly in the background, preparing breakfast, tending to the gardens, and polishing silverware that gleamed like mirrors. Among them was Eren.

He moved with quiet precision, a soft presence among the orderly chaos. Liana had noticed him countless times — always calm, always composed, but never seeking attention. His dark eyes often lingered on tasks longer than necessary, as if he were more comfortable with the world of shadows and chores than with people.

Their eyes met briefly as he carried a tray of freshly baked bread past her mother's side. Liana's heart skipped, though she would never admit it, not even to herself. There was something in the way he moved, something careful yet strong, that stirred a curious feeling she hadn't expected.

And yet, she reminded herself firmly, her family would never approve. He was just a servant. A quiet boy who did not belong in her world.

But the heart, as she was beginning to learn, does not always listen.
