The two of them stopped outside the subway station entrance.
Otis looked Mei up and down from her white sneakers, to her light blue shorts, to her hair, her phone, the bouquet in her hands, and finally the sunglasses hiding her eyes.
Mei was smiling smugly.
Otis's gaze dropped to her pocket; the fabric there bulged a little.
He froze for a second and asked,
"Don't tell me… the gift is that hug just now?"
Mei brought two fingers to her lips and made an X.
"Wrong. All your questions just now were pointless. Seriously, I don't get you, it was so obvious. The answer has been right in front of you this whole time."
Otis asked curiously, "Then what is it?"
Mei slipped a hand into her pocket and pulled out a pair of sunglasses.
"These. Sunglasses, you dummy. Super cheap, 9.9 USD a pair. Buy two and they throw in a mini pack of tissues. So I grabbed an extra pair. Now squat down a bit."
Otis squatted down.
