Evelin's POV
"How did you..." My voice trailed off before I could finish.
Allen's smile turned bitter. "That's why you came here, isn't it?"
I pressed my lips together. "Yeah. I want to get back together with Jimmy."
Allen fell silent. He'd probably seen this coming, but hearing me say it out loud still seemed to hit him hard.
People only faced the truth about their hearts when death was staring them down.
After I broke up with Jimmy, Allen had thrown everything into trying to win me back.
But he must have known, somewhere deep inside, that the way I looked at him was exactly the same as back in our army days. That wasn't love.
Nothing like how I looked at Jimmy.
In my eyes, he was just a younger brother, a comrade. Never the man I could love.
"I... I really don't stand a chance anymore, do I?" he asked, that last thread of hope still clinging to his voice.
He had to ask—otherwise he'd never let himself move on.
