The news report showed the border fire from years back. My heart clenched tight.
That blaze had erupted near Rivenwood City's border - a massive inferno that spread like wildfire. Every firefighter in the city rushed to battle it, with backup streaming in from neighboring areas. It took hours on end to kill the flames.
My older brother had vanished along that same border, so I'd followed every detail of the disaster back then.
I'd scoured the victim lists from that catastrophe, but his name never appeared.
No nearby hospital had any record of treating him. The military investigators and I had personally interviewed multiple firefighters from the rescue operation, but none had spotted him.
Even now, I couldn't tell if my brother's disappearance connected to that fire. Maybe he'd already disappeared before the flames started.
But if he was alive, I couldn't grasp why he hadn't returned. What could possibly keep him away?
