After a whole day, Luo Xinyi was finally done with unpacking his things in his new apartment at Yuehua Apartments. Since it already evening, he ordered for take out.
Yuehua Apartment was built in the late 1980s,when Yuehua city was called 'the city that never sleeps', during china's post-reform boom. The city was once the heart of china ,The future. But now a forgotten city. Yuehua apartments was a model of modern living, twelve floors, sturdy red-brick walls,wide balconies and a rooftop garden said to have the best view of the city skyline. People of high ranking once lived there.
Then something happened. No one is certain on what. A fire? An unfinished experiment? A suicide? or perhaps something stranger.
After that night,half the the resident moved out. The rest stayed, claiming they had 'no where else to go'. The building was never demolished, perhaps out of government neglect or perhaps because someone didn't want it destroyed.
Now, Yuehua Apartments is quiet. The hall smell faintly of old rain,dust...and danger.The elevator groans when it moves,if it moves at all. The light hum with the same uneven rhythm that seems to infect the whole city. Every clock inside shows a different time, except for one, mounted above the entrance:3:03am, frozen for decades. And everyone in Yuehua avoids the Apartment like a plague...well except the residents. So it is no surprise to Luo Xinyi that the delivery guy called him from across the building to come for his takeout.
Luo Xinyi who lived on the 12th floor decided to use the staircase because to him the elevator gave him a strong feeling of danger, which doesn't make sense to him. He walked all the way from the 12th floor to the ground floor and met the delivery guy who was standing nervously under a closed bakery veranda. He looked, young, someone in his late teens with nervous eyes staring at the approaching Luo Xinyi.
" Boss, you are the one who ordered takeout right?" the boy hurriedly asked. "yes"Luo Xinyi replied taking the takeout from the boy and gave him money for the food.
The boy hurriedly took the money to leave but stopped suddenly and hesitantly turned back to Luo Xinyi. "Boss,are you new here?" "Yeah..why?" Luo Xinyi asked. " Why did you pick Yuehua? There are other apartments here in Yuehua city. Like Yunhai Apartments which is twenty minutes walk from here and the Jinhe Apartments which is opposite of Yunhai. These two apartments are really good and has a...peaceful atmosphere unlike Yuehua." The boy said. " Uh, how should I address you young man?"Luo Xinyi asked. " Surname Lin, Lin Qian." "Okay, Lin Qian, what's wrong with Yuehua Apartment?"Luo Xinyi asked.
