Jasmin's POV
The vampire's words slithered through my mind like poison. A she-wolf.
Terror clawed at my chest. The rumors were true after all. These creatures could distinguish male from female just by the scent of blood. All my careful disguises, all my perfume, meant nothing to them.
Heather snarled inside my head. "But nobody else caught what he said!"
I forced my trembling hands into fists, fighting the panic threatening to consume me. She was right. The other Alphas hadn't heard the vampire's whispered revelation because the deafening shriek of bats had drowned out his voice. The sound pierced my eardrums like needles.
The ceiling erupted in a tornado of wings and shadows. Thousands of creatures took flight at once, creating a sound like bones grinding against stone. These weren't ordinary bats. They were vampires, and they were fully awake now.
