Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The Roles

"Now. The game.

Chaos is created by the clash of good and evil. Not just by the existence of chaos. If chaos reigns, it will simply be a different order of the world.

Only when order and chaos exist together, there will be true chaos.

In this game, there are two sides. A good side. And the bad side.

The good side will try their best to preserve as many people as possible.

The bad side will try to kill as many people as possible.

So the good side is the villagers. Their goal is to survive the nights in the town.

The bad side is the demons. Their goal is to kill the villagers in the night.

No… This is my first game. It shouldn't be demons. I've seen many scenarios where the players can't accept their demon role and it leads to the collapse of the game.

Not demons. Nor monsters. Nor something too hard to comprehend.

The bad side is the evil worshippers. Their goal is to kill as many villagers as possible to appeal to their evil god.

Yes… That is more fitting."

Dr. Avaline spread out his fingers. Ten glimmering cards appeared in front of him. Five of them were filled with abstract white light while five of them exuded dark smoke.

"Hmm…" Dr. Avaline rubbed his chin. "The evil worshippers have an advantage. They have more information than the villagers. Balancing the numbers of the good and evil players would lead to the bad side winning most of the time.

I know a lot of social deduction games have this effect. The hidden evil players are always in a better situation. To actually balance good and evil, I need to reduce the number of evil worshippers."

Dr. Avaline wiped his hand over the card. Three of the evil cards turned white.

"Eight good players and two evil players. That should be enough. I can adjust further in future games."

Dr. Avaline actually could use more Fate strands to look into the future. But his Fate reserve is limited. Wasting it more would not be wise. After all, he had seen too many iterations of the future already.

He had enough data to construct the game. Further inspection would only lead to waste, not enhancement.

"There needs to be a purpose for this game. Mindless killing leads to no Chaos, unless the players have the urge to actually do it. The good side also needs a reason to work together.

There needs to be a reward. A reward for the victors."

Dr. Avaline closed his eyes and felt the air in his dream playground. He had many choices for rewards. Chaos could interfere with the real world, gaining players power they and strength they never had. Fate could show them the future or the shortest path to what they desired for. Truth could reward them with wisdom and intelligence.

"I can't let them do whatever they want with Fate, Truth, and Chaos. That would lead to unimaginable consequences. My reward must be designed carefully, tailored to each of the victors."

Dr. Avaline's grin widened. "The reward must also be tempting enough so that the players want to return.

Fate will show them a glimpse into their destiny. The error of their ways, a question of the past, or maybe what the future may hold. But I must restrict it so it would only show what I want them to see. Letting them observe their entire destiny would be catastrophic.

True will enlighten them. Giving them the knowledge that the real worl can never bring. Still, I need to restrict it into a clue, a hint, or a page in an entire book.

Chaos will empower them. Strength, speed, intelligence, wisdom. Even individual skills can be gained. I can't give them supernatural skills obviously. Just ordinary skill or basic physical and mental prowess are sufficient.

Those will be my reward to them. They will have the option to choose between the three of them. But how do I balance this? If the villagers win there will be much more reward than the evil side. But I can't limit the reward based on numbers either, it will just cause the good side to turn on each other.

Performance is the answer. The one who makes the most impact on the game will have the most reward.

There can also be a penalty for the losing side. No. This would just discourage players from wanting to play the game again. The game is already a punishment. The mental torture, the deception, the betrayal.

I feel like I'm becoming an evil god. Ha ha!"

Dr. Avaline's fingers weaved in the air, adding more and more rules to his playground.

"Finally I must make unique 'roles'. These roles can add more dynamic to the game, creating more chaos.

There are eight villagers in total.

One of them is the sentinel. The sentinel can protect himself or someone else from the killing of the evil worshippers each night.

One of them is the hunter. The hunter is the only good player that can kill another player by himself. He can kill good or evil players. This ability should be limited to one time only to make sure the game is balanced.

One of them is the psychic. The psychic can see the true identity of another player. This ability has no limit but can only be used one a day.

Then the remaining fives will be normal villagers with no ability. They can be cannon fodders or the scapegoat for the worshippers.

Now there are the evil worshippers. Evil worshippers need to get out of their house at night to kill whoever it is they want to kill. They can only kill one player a night.

Why don't we up the difficulty of the game up a notch?"

Dr. Avaline suddenly grinned. "Only the fittest can survive. And the villagers are already too powerful with their three roles. Let's balance that.

One of the evil worshippers is the priest. The psychic cannot find out their true potential.

The other is a follower. They have no ability except killing."

Dr. Avaline's fingers came to a halt. The floating cards solidified and on their surface now had oil portraits of their roles.

"There are more that I need to work on. The mechanics of the game. The limitations between day and night.

This is also a simulation of the physical world so there is more than just survival and killing. They need to eat, drink, and sleep.

The social deduction and killing only adds onto the chaos the game has made.

One final thing…"

Dr. Avaline reached into his dark hole on his chest and took out a speck of gold dust. He put it into his mouth to verify a fact.

"Mmmm. Delicious." His eyes flashed gold as he was given the answer.
