Chapter 23: Omashu's Gates
POV: Sam Alen
Omashu rose from Earth Kingdom landscape like a monument to human ingenuity triumphing over gravity, its impossible slopes and delivery chutes making Sam's engineering brain sing with appreciation while his enhanced spiritual sensitivity detected something ancient and powerful at the city's heart that pulsed with controlled chaos exactly like he imagined King Bumi's energy would feel.
"Incredible. The engineering alone should be impossible with their technology level, but somehow they've created a functioning city on vertical terrain."
Sam's thermal perception mapped the city's infrastructure as they approached—thousands of heat signatures organized in patterns that spoke of sophisticated urban planning, delivery systems that moved materials through pneumatic principles his old world would recognize, and at the center, something that made his enhanced awareness recoil with recognition of power beyond normal human limits.
"That has to be Bumi. No one else could radiate spiritual energy that feels like a mountain learning to laugh."
"The gates are closed," Sokka observed with tactical awareness that immediately shifted into problem-solving mode. "Security checkpoint. They're not letting anyone through without proper documentation."
"Fire Nation activity. The city's on lockdown because of military threats in the region."
"What kind of documentation?" Aang asked with the innocent curiosity of someone who'd never encountered bureaucratic barriers to travel.
"The kind we don't have. Official travel permits, trade licenses, citizenship papers—none of which exist for a group consisting of the Avatar, two Water Tribe refugees, and a transmigrator with no legal identity."
"The kind that proves we're not Fire Nation infiltrators," Sam replied diplomatically. "Which we can't provide through normal channels."
"Because our presence here is inherently abnormal and our mission is technically classified information."
"So how do we get in?" Katara asked with the practical concern of someone who'd grown up navigating adult problems through creative solutions.
"In canon, they used the delivery system. But that approach was reckless and nearly got them killed. With proper planning, we can do better."
Sam studied the city's defenses through his enhanced perception, mapping guard positions and structural weaknesses with the analytical mindset that had kept him alive since transmigrating.
"The walls are designed to prevent ground assault, but they're vulnerable to aerial approach if you know where the blind spots are."
"Controlled infiltration," Sam said carefully, outlining a plan that would achieve their goal without creating unnecessary chaos. "Combination approach using Aang's airbending for lift, my ice platforms for staging points, and Sokka's tactical planning for timing."
"Professional approach that demonstrates competence rather than causing destruction."
"That sounds complicated," Aang protested with the simplicity preference that made him effective as a mediator.
"Simple approaches often create more problems than they solve when dealing with established security procedures."
"Complicated prevents disasters," Sam replied with the patient authority of someone who'd learned to prefer thorough planning over exciting improvisation.
The infiltration itself became a showcase of everything they'd learned about coordination and mutual support. Sam's ice platforms provided stable staging points for Aang's airbending. Sokka's timing calculations ensured they moved during guard rotation gaps. Katara's waterbending created mist cover that concealed their approach.
"Professional execution. We're not just sneaking in—we're demonstrating tactical competence that commands respect."
"Halt!" The voice came from a city guard who'd spotted their final approach, but his tone carried professional assessment rather than hostile challenge.
"Good. They recognize skill when they see it."
"We're seeking audience with King Bumi," Aang replied with diplomatic honesty that usually served him well in official encounters.
"Direct approach. No deception, no evasion. Smart choice when dealing with competent authority figures."
"Through unofficial entry methods?" The guard's question carried amusement rather than accusation.
"He's impressed rather than angry. Professional respect for professional execution."
"Official channels were closed due to security concerns," Sam explained respectfully. "We needed to demonstrate that our presence isn't a threat to city security."
"True. And our approach proved we could bypass their defenses if we intended harm, but chose not to."
"Interesting logic," the guard replied with growing approval. "And effective demonstration. You're granted provisional visitor status pending official audience."
"Success. We're in the city legally and with official recognition of our competence."
The city of Omashu exceeded every expectation Sam had developed from animated representations. Where the show had suggested organized chaos, reality revealed sophisticated engineering that blended practical necessity with artistic sensibility in ways that spoke of generations of accumulated wisdom.
"This isn't just functional architecture. This is an entire civilization built around the principle that efficiency and beauty can coexist."
"The delivery system!" Aang exclaimed with delighted recognition as they observed packages sliding through pneumatic tubes that connected every level of the vertical city.
"Here it comes. The canonical temptation to ride the mail system for fun."
"Can we try it?" Aang asked with the eager excitement of someone who'd spent a century missing out on new experiences.
"In canon, this nearly killed them. But with proper supervision and engineering analysis..."
"The slide-chutes of package-moving are fun-times but also maybe bone-breaking death-accidents waiting," Sam's curse produced when he tried to explain the specific dangers involved.
"Perfect. Gibberish that fails to communicate actual risk assessment."
"What he means," Sokka translated with diplomatic skill that had improved markedly over their journey, "is that the system is designed for cargo, not passengers. Safety considerations would be... significant."
"Good translation. Sokka's learning to interpret my curse episodes effectively."
"But we could calculate safe routes, right?" Aang pressed with the determined optimism that made him impossible to discourage completely.
"We could. With proper engineering analysis and controlled conditions, it could be done safely."
"Supervised experimentation only," Sam conceded, recognizing that complete prohibition would just encourage unsupervised attempts. "Engineering assessment first, safety protocols second, fun third."
"Responsible adult compromise. Let them have childhood experiences while preventing actual disasters."
The controlled exploration that followed became a masterclass in applied physics and creative problem-solving. Sam's engineering knowledge identified routes with appropriate gradients and safe termination points. Sokka developed timing systems that prevented collisions. Aang used airbending to fine-tune acceleration and deceleration.
"This is what proper adult supervision looks like. Not preventing all risk, but managing risk intelligently."
"Remarkable," said a voice that carried the authority of centuries and the playfulness of someone who'd never lost appreciation for clever solutions to interesting problems.
"That voice. Ancient, powerful, and completely unimpressed by normal status hierarchies. That has to be Bumi."
They turned to find a messenger in royal livery whose formal bearing contrasted with the distinctly unofficial nature of his message delivery method—he'd arrived via the same delivery system they'd been exploring.
"Only Bumi would send official invitations through mail tubes."
"His Majesty King Bumi requests the honor of your presence for afternoon tea and conversation," the messenger announced with the practiced formality that covered amusement at his unusual arrival method.
"Afternoon tea and conversation. Not an audience, not a formal meeting. Personal invitation."
"The invitation specifically mentions 'the one who doesn't belong but fits perfectly anyway,'" the messenger continued, his eyes finding Sam with recognition that suggested the description was intentionally specific.
"He knows. Somehow, King Bumi knows exactly what I am."
"All of us?" Aang asked with the inclusive instincts that defined his approach to friendship.
"Of course he'd want to include everyone. That's exactly who Aang is."
"All of you," the messenger confirmed with approval for the question itself. "His Majesty anticipated that response and expressed particular pleasure in meeting friends who consider each other family."
"Family. Is that what we are? When did that transition happen?"

[WARNING: TRANSMIGRATOR STATUS RECOGNITION LIKELY]
Sam's enhanced perception painted King Bumi's chi signature even from this distance—vast, ancient, terrifyingly playful, like geological forces that had learned to find humor in the passage of time. Whatever test was coming, it would challenge more than just physical abilities.
"He's going to test everything. My knowledge, my wisdom, my commitment to empowering others rather than controlling them."
The invitation included a riddle written in elegant script: "How does one who knows tomorrow teach those who live today without stealing their chance to learn?"
"He knows. Not just that I'm unusual, but specifically that I have foreknowledge. This is a test of how I use that knowledge."
"What does that mean?" Katara asked, reading over Sam's shoulder with the curiosity that made her such an effective student.
"It means King Bumi has identified me as someone who sees potential futures and is questioning whether I guide people toward growth or rob them of agency by providing easy answers."
"It means the king wants to understand our teaching philosophy," Sam replied carefully. "How we help each other learn versus how we solve problems for each other."
"True without revealing the transmigrator-specific nature of the challenge."
"That's an important distinction," Sokka observed with the strategic thinking that would eventually make him legendary. "Teaching someone to fish versus just giving them fish."
"Exactly. And Bumi's going to test whether I actually believe in that principle or just use it when convenient."
As they prepared to meet the king, Sam experienced profound anxiety unlike anything since arriving in this world. Bumi was Aang's friend—a relationship a hundred years old and deeply personal. Sam inserting himself into that reunion felt like intrusion on sacred ground.
But the invitation had specifically included him, and refusing would be both insult and cowardice.
"I'm part of Team Avatar now. That means I get included in everything, even moments that feel like they should belong to others. That's the price of belonging."
[FATE DEVIATION: 19.78%]
[SYSTEM NOTE: CONVERGENCE WITH MAJOR CANON EVENT - TIMELINE STABILIZING]
Whatever test King Bumi had planned, Sam would face it as part of the family he'd found rather than the outsider he'd once been.
The question was whether he would prove worthy of that inclusion.
