The city burned red against the night sky.
Sirens howled, and smoke rose like a wounded beast clawing at the stars.
Arden's boots hit the soaked pavement with practiced rhythm.
The heat was suffocating, the air heavy with soot and despair.
"Sector B, collapse imminent!"
"Get everyone out! Now!"
Arden's radio crackled, but he was already moving. He ducked beneath a fallen beam,
coughing, eyes scanning through the orange haze.
Inside, a man lay trapped beneath a slab of concrete, gasping weakly.
"Hang on! You're not dying here," Arden said, voice hoarse but firm. His gloved hands
hooked beneath the man's arm, muscles straining as the fire roared around them.
Another crash echoed above. The building groaned like it was alive, dying.
"Come on—!" He pulled, teeth gritted, until the man slid free.
He could hear the rescue team shouting from the stairwell.
They were coming—but the ceiling was cracking, seconds from falling.
Arden shoved the man forward. "Get him out first!"
The man turned in horror. "Wait—what about you!?"
"Go!" Arden barked, giving him one last push.
A rumble swallowed the world.
The ceiling came down like judgment. Heat devoured everything.
In that final instant, as light turned to flame, a strange thought crossed his mind:
"I couldn't even get married… what'll happen to me now?"
Then there was silence.
No pain. No sound. Only weightlessness.
Between Life and Death
When his vision returned, the world was gone.
He floated in an endless sea of light—white, soft, infinite.
His burns were gone. His body... didn't even feel like a body anymore.
"Huh… so this is what death looks like," he muttered. "Not bad. Little bright, though."
A voice answered, calm and echoing from everywhere at once:
"You've saved many lives, mortal. Enough that even Heaven has taken notice."
Arden squinted into the glow. A figure formed within it — neither man nor woman, yet somehow both. Its presence felt absolute.
He blinked. "Who… are you, miss? Or… mister?"
The being's light shimmered, almost amused.
"You may call me what you wish. I am simply… the one who watches."
"Great. So, God." He chuckled nervously. "Guess that means I'm dead."
"You are. But your deeds weigh heavily on the scales. You may choose another life — any
world, any form. As your reward."
Arden's jaw went slack. "Wait… anything I want?"
"Yes."
He scratched the back of his neck, thinking. "So no restrictions? Not even the weird ones?"
The voice was silent for a moment. "…Within reason."
Arden grinned. "Hah, guess I'll keep my fantasies private, then. Don't want Heaven to
revoke my ticket."
For a moment, he just drifted there.
He'd never thought of wanting anything before. His whole life had been about saving
others, not dreaming for himself.
"I just… want peace. Maybe a long life this time," he murmured.
"Like those elves… they live forever, right?"
The divine light pulsed. "There are many worlds of peace. Why does your heart think of the elves?"
"They always looked free. Untouched. Beautiful," he admitted softly. "Maybe I just want to
see that beauty with my own eyes. I might have a teensy bit of lust too—well, I am a man."
The light shimmered green, like sunlight through leaves.
"The elves are dying," the god said. "Their prayers go unanswered. Their men are gone.
Their race wanes to extinction. If you choose them… you must restore them."
Arden blinked. "Restore them? Like… populate them?"
"Precisely."
A long silence.
Then, he sighed and smiled faintly. "Saving lives again, huh? Guess that's the one thing I'm good at."
The divine light drew closer, golden runes spiraling over his chest.
"Then it is decided. You will be reborn among them—as the last of their kind."
"Wait—last? Hold on, what do you—"
"There will never be another male elf born in that world. You are their Highborn One."
Arden groaned. "So I have to do the manly duty of protecting these people?"
"Yes. And much more."
Warmth enveloped him, gentle as a fire's heart.
For the first time in his life, he wasn't saving someone else. He was answering a prayer.
The god's final words echoed as light consumed him:
"Go, Highborn one. Let the new age begin."
A sound like a thunderclap shook the air. Thummmm.
Arden gasped. Cold wind touched his face.
He opened his eyes — and saw a forest of luminous silver trees, ancient and vast.
A thousand elven women stood in a circle around an altar of marble and vines.
Their clothes shimmered like moonlight, their gazes filled with awe.
He blinked. "Okay… not gonna lie, this is a first."
Then he looked down.
His reflection shimmered faintly in the marble — silver hair, sharp ears, radiant skin that
looked carved by gods.
And, most notably, he was very, very naked.
Arden froze. "…Hah. When did I get this handsome?"
The crowd gasped. Murmurs spread. Dozens of beautiful faces turned red, eyes wide —
not at his face.
"Oh. Oh no."
He clutched at himself, mortified. "Nope, nope, don't look! Privacy, people! Divine
modesty!"
Before he could finish, a chime echoed in his head.

"…Wow. So I'm trying to protect my chastity, and you want me to do that?"

"Yeah, sure. Why not. No pressure."
A young priestess stepped forward — golden hair, eyes like emerald water. She bowed
deeply, voice trembling.
"Welcome, High Lord. We have awaited your presence for decades."
"Decades?" he blinked. "What, nobody else wanted to reincarnate as an elf?"
Her lips curved in a bittersweet smile. "None. The males have vanished for over five
centuries. You are the first light we have seen."
Arden rubbed his temple. "So I'm the lord now. The last one at that. Great. What could
possibly go wrong?"
He glanced around at the thousands of expectant eyes and sighed.
"Well… let's start with step one."
He straightened his back, trying to look majestic.
"Before all this divine destiny stuff—can I at least get some underwear?"
The elves blinked in confusion. Then, one offered him a ceremonial robe.
He sighed in relief, slipping it on. "Much better."
As the moonlight poured over the altar, the elves bowed again, chanting softly.
A new legend had begun — and Arden, the last male elf, had no idea just how many lives his would soon change.
The wind quieted. Moonlight bathed the altar in silver.
Arden adjusted the robe over his shoulders, still processing everything — the god's words,
the kneeling elves, the absurd system messages floating in his vision.
Then another chime rang softly.
[Ding!]

Arden exhaled. "Guess that's my cue."
He looked up at the moon — pale, impossibly large, hanging above a world that wasn't
Earth.
Beneath its light, thousands of elves knelt in reverence.
Somewhere deep in the forest, a faint whisper of ancient magic stirred.
And for the first time since his death, Arden smiled — uncertain, overwhelmed… but alive.
"Alright then," he murmured.
"Let's see what kind of world I just saved."
