Cherreads

Chapter 6 - the whisper again:

The rain had stopped.

Mist clung to the garden stones, and the moon floated like a silver coin above the Ye estate.

Ye Chen sat beneath the same plum tree where he had first drawn breath as a cultivator. The petals around him were still wet; each reflected starlight like a mirror to the heavens.

He closed his eyes.

The moment his consciousness entered the Book Realm, everything changed.

The shelves stretched farther than ever before, their spines glowing faintly in the dark. Yet tonight the silence felt alive—as though unseen eyes watched from between the stacks.

A low hum rolled through the void.

> "Seeker of Words… you have turned another page."

The voice was neither male nor female, soft yet thunderous inside his mind.

Ye Chen froze. "Who are you?"

> "The Reader before the First Reader."

The shelves trembled, and one book drifted free—a slender volume bound in black silk, its title half-erased.

> "Origin of the Scripture That Walks"

When Ye Chen touched it, the cover dissolved into light.

Images flashed across his thoughts: a world collapsing into ash; a scholar writing in the air itself; books scattering through time like shooting stars.

Then the whisper again:

> "Each world births one who can read the truth behind truth.

You found the fallen page.

Now you must finish what the last Reader could not."

The vision faded. The shelves stilled. Only the faint glow of the new book remained.

---

Ye Chen opened his eyes to the quiet night. His heart pounded.

A fallen page… the book I picked up in my world… was a fragment of this realm itself?

He remembered the moment he'd found it—lying in rainwater on a gray street, as if it had waited for him.

Perhaps the Book Realm wasn't merely a gift; perhaps it was a living scripture seeking its next guardian.

---

A knock broke his thoughts.

"Young Master Ye, the Patriarch requests your presence at dawn," a servant called softly.

"Messengers from the Heavenly Sword Sect have arrived. They wish to meet the clan's new prodigy."

Ye Chen's eyes narrowed. Another test already.

> "Tell the Patriarch I'll be there."

As the servant left, Ye Chen looked once more at the sky.

> "So the world wishes to test me again…

Then let it. For every challenge, I gain another line to read."

He returned to meditation, the words of the mysterious voice echoing faintly:

> "Finish what the last Reader could not."

And deep within the Book Realm, the black-silk volume slowly opened its first page.
