Chapter 1 - Fix her

"Fix her," Sebastian demanded as the knuckles of his right hand rattled against his lips. Every part of him seemed to quiver and quake in a semi-controlled manner.

His rich bronze eyes switched between Mora, who lay on the bed; and Zephyrus who was sitting at the edge of the bed facing him. The older blonde man with the lab coat glanced down out of the corner of his right eye. His lip curled on one side at the unconscious woman with thick thunks of developing grey hair.

Zephyrus wrinkled his nose and tsked. "She drank your essence, did she not! I cannot condone fixing the blood drinker."

"I am not asking!" Sebastian shouted as he removed his hand from his mouth.

Zephyrus mumbled under his breath. He tilted his head to the floor with a heavy sigh. "I am not paid to tend to her. She is not my patient. I have no interest in her well-being. Her anatomy differs vastly from yours."

"Is it not similar!? Sebastian questioned as he spun around, facing a burgundy wall with light red designs in a paisley pattern. Two dark brown leather armchairs sat two feet apart, mocking him with their comfort. "Does it matter? He swirled back around. "I am asking you to perform the duty of a doctor!" Sebastian snarled, his upper half leaning toward the doctor.

Zephyrus stood while pointing down to the deep red and gold duvet. She is a creature of the night. You are sick, my lord, tricked by her beauty and curvy frame. Your blood and body are too different." He strode forward, stepping up to Sebastian, his head vertical from the lord's ear. He reached up and clasped Sebastian's shoulder. "You are too taken with your pale skinned, buxom bride. Perhaps treating her with distance is in your best interest. Do I need to remind you that the life essence that flows in your veins is different? Feed her, not from your veins. A staff member will do, or if you are feeling sentimental, a random villager."

Zephyrus stepped away, squeezing Sebastian's shoulder two more times, with each squeeze his brows lifted at different intervals. He then patted the shoulder as his frown tightened. "It's stiff. You need treatment."

"No, she needs your expertise." Sebastian's voice rose.

Zephyrus quickly reached both hands around Sebastian's neck. He rubbed mumbling in his home language. "Fine, I will fix the woman but you must endure treatment. Head to the West Annex, no delays, the pool is always ready." He released Sebastian's neck with his body now facing a vanity across the room.

Sebastian's eyes darted around the room. His mouth opened and closed as a gritty rough dryness slowly crept in. "Fine." He turned his back to Zephyrus, who immediately cursed under his breath.

The tips of Sebastian's ears turned red. A small ball developed, poking out from his lower left cheek, and it slowly retreated away. He moved across the dark red and gold oriental rug to the cherry wooden floorboards. The sound switched from a soft scuff to a hard tap drawing him near a pair of dark double doors with a golden French handle. His body tensed with each movement slowly becoming rigid. Once he reached the door, Zephyrus spoke.

"You waited too long. Shall I send someone to wheel you down."

Sebastian could hear the gloating in Zephyrus's voice. The I told you so lingering on the man's sharp tongue.

"Your blonde hair seems a bit whiter. Perhaps you should worry about your own health. I still have the capacity to walk. So, I will." Sebastian's hands wrapped around the handle, only to find the elasticity of his hands feeling numb. The tightness of his skin shrinking against the cool metal.

"Open the door then, no delays," said Zephyrus.

Sebastian heard the soft shift of Zephyrus shoes on the rug. The wrinkle of the man's lab coat. Sebastian's right nostril flared. His eyes glowered at the door before harshly pushing the handles down. His shoulders and lower back ached at the force he applied to open the doors.

The double doors barely bunged despite the force he applied. They parted a quarter of the way, making it comfortable for him to slip through. A flush accompanied with a sharp unheard grind of his teeth filled him with a sense of embarrassment. He stopped momentarily before storming away with stiff legs that refused to bend. Zephyrus's wild laughter chased him down the darkened hallway.
