Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 — Four

Serena's POV

The drive back home was exhausting. Today's events replayed in my mind, and a groan slipped out before I could stop it.

Never in a million years did I think the man I slept with would turn out to be my boss. The thought alone made my stomach twist.

Alexander Blackwood. He was the definition of a male Adonis. But each time memories of the previous night flashed through my mind, I still felt a chill.

It was just a man. Just a one night stand. It was just a mistake — one that would haunt me forever.

Once I arrived at my apartment, I sank into the couch as I rubbed my neck and let out a long sigh. The silence of my apartment clashed with the turmoil in my chest, gnawing at my anxiety.

The hum of the refrigerator was the only sound. It made the silence feel heavier... like it was pressing against my chest.

I replayed the events of the morning — when he asked me to stay back. The way he spoke to me was... commanding. And his voice — oh his voice was filled with teasing even if he didn't realize it.

I buried my face in my palms. How was I supposed to survive working under him when memories of the night continued to surface in my mind?

The sudden ringing of my phone shattered my thoughts.

I picked it up and muttered under my breath. "Maya?"

"Girl, I'm at your door. Didn't you hear me knocking and ringing the doorbell?" Once the call connected, her loud accusing voice sounded.

I blinked, and my eyes darted to the door. "Sorry." I apologized. "I'm on my way."

A few seconds later, Maya was in my living room, hands on her waist as she threw me an accusing glare. I stared at her innocently. Or maybe, deep within me I felt relieved by her presence.

"Spill it." She demanded.

My brows furrowed as I stared at her. What was she talking about? Or perhaps... I knew.

"What... what am I spilling? What are you talking about?" I feigned ignorance.

She scoffed as she took her seat. "Serena Wilson, don't feign ignorance. How did you know Mr. Blackwood?"

My heart raced against my chest, swallowing as I stared at her. As expected, I couldn't hide anything from her. She was observant. Perhaps, this was why she was my closest friend.

"Maya... it's a long story." I sank onto the couch behind me.

"Then shorten it. I'm not blind. I can see the chemistry going on between you both. And it seems like you are avoiding him. So, tell me. What's the issue?"

I bit my lips as I made her promise to me. "Promise if I tell you, you won't be mad." I locked eyes with her, and I could tell she could see the seriousness in my eyes.

"Fine... but it depends." I stared at her pointedly. "Fine, just tell me."

Without any hesitation, I recounted everything which had taken place the previous day. By the time I was done with my narration, Maya sat frozen on her seat with her head lowered.

I knew I shouldn't have told her. She'd always react this way. Slowly, she raised her head, staring at me wide-eyed.

"You lost your virginity?" she whispered, eyes wide, surprise evident in it.

Then, her voice came again, louder this time. "And it was with our boss? Girl, are you insane?!"

I looked away while grimacing slightly. I couldn't meet her gaze.

After a few seconds, I reluctantly nodded confirming her words.

"Ah!" She shrieked. Her face was filled with horror and shock.

"You slept with our boss?" She rose to her feet, pacing around. It seemed like she was more worried than I was.

I bit my lips while staring at her. "I didn't mean to do it. I thought it was just one night. I wasn't expecting that he'd be our new boss, okay?" My finger twisted the hem of my shirt and I rubbed my neck slightly.

Suddenly, a sharp knock cut through the room. Maya and I froze as we exchanged glances. Then came another knock, and my heart skipped a bit.

"Are you expecting someone?" Maya asked, and I shook my head. I rarely got guests. I wasn't the social type.

"I'll check it." I said, and rose to my feet. I dragged myself to the door, every step heavier than the last.

My fingers trembled against the handle. One twist, then a click.

The scent of cologne hit me before my brain caught up. It was clean, masculine, and most importantly familiar.

My breath caught in my throat. Please... anyone but him.

And then I saw him.
