"Your husband commands respect, Jessica," Papa declared, satisfaction evident in his weathered features. "International operations have flourished since he assumed control."
I resisted the impulse to glance toward Caleb, maintaining steady eye contact with Papa instead. "I assured you he possessed the necessary skills."
Papa's head dipped in acknowledgment. "Absolutely. Your judgment has never been questionable. You understand what benefits our enterprise, naturally."
His final words weren't meant for my ears alone, but for the vultures circling our conference table, desperately hunting for weaknesses to exploit. Their search would prove fruitless.
