Cornelia's POV
The thunderous roar of helicopter blades shattered my uneasy slumber. The mechanical whir felt completely out of place on this secluded island, and my first instinct screamed one name: Griffin.
But why would he come here now? We hadn't crossed paths once since that day he left me stranded on this remote sanctuary. Not a single word had passed between us. So what could possibly bring him here? Had something terrible happened? To David?
I launched myself from the bed without bothering to grab a robe or cover myself, my bare feet pounding against the frigid stone floors as I flew down the staircase. My pulse hammered so violently in my ears that it nearly drowned out every other sound, yet it couldn't silence the chaos consuming my thoughts.
Was David hurt? Was he in danger?
What could Griffin possibly want?
The household staff had emerged from their quarters but wisely stayed indoors, watching from the safety of the windows.
