Chapter 82 - Intense Will to Survive

Tony had been using satellite surveillance and simulation calculations to track the trajectory of the enemy plane.

So, the group didn't have to wait long in the high altitude before a long trail appeared in the distant clouds, hurtling towards them.

"I'll go alone."

Shen He activated his armor's thrusters, accelerating in the direction of the plane's flight path.

While Tony's armor wasn't the best in terms of energy endurance, its short-burst speed was still quite impressive.

Once close, Shen He's armor, moving at supersonic speeds, closed in on the top of the jet. He then used a laser heat source to cut a hole, and the sudden imbalance in internal and external air pressure caused the entire plane to spin rapidly and decelerate, beginning to fall.

Shen He gripped the opening with some difficulty, peering inside.

"Tony, there's only one pilot in here."

"What?!" Tony exclaimed in surprise. "But that's the only plane that took off from the Hydra base."

"He must have jumped mid-flight." Shen He released his grip and returned to Jeanne and the others. "After all, Garrett is an old fox in Hydra, an elite agent. It's normal for him to be so cunning and cautious. He probably guessed we were after him, and there are still remnants of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s defenses on Tahiti. It wouldn't be useful for him to go there alone."

Garrett should have jumped out of the plane with Coulson midway, planning to find Hydra's organizational personnel and then retrieve what he wanted with a foolproof plan.

"This route passes through many island nations, as well as places like Brazil and Argentina. It's going to be a pain to find them." Tony also felt a bit helpless.

"It's okay, you can just treat it as a cameo and go back to what you were doing." Shen He didn't really care. "In the face of absolute power, schemes and tricks are not worth mentioning. I guess he definitely doesn't know we have a giant dog that can teleport."

It'll just waste a lot of time. Shen He sighed inwardly.

Seriously, is there no villain who can be solved simply and honestly? Their will to survive is too strong.

"Jeanne, I can only trouble you again. Just give me a vague location, and we'll keep teleporting closer."

"Alright, Master."

Jeanne agreed decisively.

She was already accustomed to using Revelation to find the way.

On the other hand, Garrett, after the plane had taken off for half an hour, had already parachuted out of the plane with Coulson, feeling somewhat smug.

"Your friends may be strong, but they are still too naive." Garrett pulled Coulson to his safe house in Brazil. "Humans are actually weak creatures in nature, it has always been like this. Therefore, we are accustomed to struggling for survival. Everything I do is just to survive."

"Then you shouldn't be an agent, because for us, life is the easiest thing to lose."

Coulson wasn't restrained, but a bracelet equipped with a neurotoxin was on his wrist.

Whether Garrett pressed the switch on the metal bracket on his waist, or his heart rate dropped below a dangerous level, the toxin in the bracelet would kill Coulson within a few seconds.

"Heh, I've also been on the brink of death countless times, only to survive. That's when I truly understood the value of life." Garrett cautiously surveyed the surroundings outside the safe house.

Years of experience as a special agent had taught Garrett a valuable lesson.

That lesson was: you can never have too many aces up your sleeve.

"If you just want to live, you should surrender," Coulson suddenly said. "That drug might save you, but it will also drive you insane. Chaldea, however, they definitely have the ability and technology to save you. You know, I have a good relationship with them."

"…You always have a good relationship with everyone," Garrett sighed sadly, saying nothing more.

He had always been a fence-sitter.

After realizing that things were going south, he'd considered abandoning Hydra. However, after Alexander told him about the drug that could bring people back from the dead, he made the wrong choice.

Now, there was no chance of redemption. He knew Coulson well. This always-smiling, good-natured man was also an elite agent with countless lives on his hands. If he surrendered, living out the rest of his short life in prison would be the best outcome.

"Dong, dong, dong."

A rhythmic knocking suddenly echoed from the door.

Garrett sprang to his feet, a submachine gun clutched in his hand. He cautiously approached the door and peered through the peephole.

"You're finally here, Ward."

Standing outside the door was Agent Ward, the one who had been knocked out cold by Steve the previous night.

"Sir." Agent Ward entered.

A bruise still marked his forehead, and his eyes were bloodshot.

It seemed he was exhausted from escaping and then rushing here.

"You don't need to call me 'sir' anymore," Garrett said, gently patting his shoulder. "Actually, I've always wanted to hear you call me 'father.' You are my adopted son, after all, aren't you?"

"…Yes, Father."

Ward genuinely held deep affection for the man who had raised him.

"Alright, as much as I'm happy to see you, we don't have time for reminiscing," Garrett immediately began packing his weapons and clothes. "That group possesses a certain ability to see into the future, so we must keep moving. We'll split up now. Coulson, you're with me. I'm going elsewhere. Don't worry, even if they know where we are, they won't be able to catch up to us that quickly."

Garrett's plan was perfect. That group wouldn't care about a small figure like him. The main reason they were pursuing him was for Coulson.

But Coulson's mind still contained what he needed: the usage of that drug, records of its side effects, and so on. So, he would have Ward stall for time.

After he obtained the drug, he would rendezvous with Ward.

"Where should we go?" Agent Ward asked.

"Whatever. When dealing with precognitive abilities, having no objective is the best objective."

Garrett finished packing and walked out.

But in less than two seconds, he returned.

"How is this possible…" Garrett muttered to himself.

"Let's just say," Shen He walked in alone from outside, shrugging. "You know nothing of true power."

The chase took longer than Shen He anticipated; the big dog was almost exhausted, so they took a detour to a store to buy some dog food to reward it.

"As long as I press the button, Coulson is dead." Garrett's expression was uncertain, but he still had a trump card. "If I die, the result is the same."

"Is that so?" Shen He also noticed the bracelet on Coulson's wrist.

The moment he looked, the bracelet shattered and fell.

Saiki Kusuo had been waiting outside the door the whole time.

"So, what now?" Shen He raised his pistol, aiming at Garrett's head. "Do you have any last words?"

"I still have value!"

Garrett struggled to remain calm, dropping the weapon in his hand and looking at Shen He imploringly.

"I dedicated most of my life to protecting the people, and now I just want to live. Can't you show me a little mercy? I'm willing to hand over everything: Hydra's intel, S.H.I.E.L.D.'s secrets, anything!"

Ward looked at his adoptive father with disbelief, the man who had been a hero in his eyes.

This must be a ploy to lull him into a false sense of security, Ward thought.

The adoptive father had a pistol and a dagger at his waist, ready to strike when his opponent least expected it.

Clang

Garrett dropped the pistol and dagger onto the ground, raising his hands.

"I am now just an old man, unarmed."

"...You still have value," Shen He said, a little speechless. "Coulson, is he always like this?"

"No, Mr. Shen," Coulson said, walking in front of Shen He. "He once didn't fear sacrifice; now he's just old."
