Chapter 3 - Chapter Three

The cab dropped me off at my apartment. "Home, sweet home", I muttered as I walked towards the building that I had lived in virtually my whole life.

My younger brother, James was outside gardening. He had recently graduated high school and was waiting to get into college. He was all I had left in the world. My late mother had been an only child and her parents were long gone.

My dad, on the other hand, had a brother. Problem was, he was a busy man and lived on the other side of the world. He found time to call once in a while, and occasionally sent us some money, but we were mostly on our own.

We had indeed been very lucky that my parents had set up welfare accounts for the both of us. However, they had died not too long after and so they hadn't had enough time to really leave us much money.

The accounts had helped with my college fees though. I was in my first year then. Even with working several part time jobs, it would have been nearly impossible to pay my college fees and James's high school tuition without money from the accounts.

However, with continuous withdrawals from these accounts, they had become nearly empty. I quickly graduated, found a job and managed to earn quite enough for us to feed and save up for James's education.

 Until William ruined everything.

 "Hold on ", I thought

 " I have a job.Not just any job—the

job no else wants. The worst job in the city, probably. But it is mine. " I smiled.

And right there, in my yard, I made a decision.

I wasn't going to fail. Ever. I was going to do my best at this job and if Mr. CEO didn't like me, he couldn't fucking go to hell.

"Hey, bro!" I called to get his attention.

"Wassup, sis!" He replied. "How'd it go today?", he asked further.

 "I got a job! I shrieked.

 "Whoa!" he yelled in delight.

"Yup. And you won't believe it, but I'm now the official secretary to the CEO of Stonewell Enterprises."

"Damian Stonewell? The Damian Stonewell?" he asked in shock.

" Yes James", I replied. "I had no other choice. A job is a job."

" Are you gonna be okay?" he asked concerned.

" Of course, bro. I just hope it all works out". I said

"Oh, and Ava? I just remembered. That lady at McDonald's? The one I've been bugging for a job? She said to come see the store manager tomorrow. I might have a chance." he said.

"Wow, that's really nice. Um, you know what, go take the chicken out of the freezer. I'll be back as soon as I take a shower so we can fix dinner." I said and went upstairs to my room.

 Later at night

That night, I tossed and turned but couldn't sleep. I eventually sat up. I leaned back on the bedposts and began to think about how I ended up at this point.

Only one name came to mind. Matthew, my ex. "No, Ava," I shook my head. "You can't start doing this now. You have a big day ahead of you tomorrow."

I lay back down and pulled the covers over my head.

Tomorrow, I start my new job. I get to meet him. The Damian Stonewell.
