Cherreads

Chapter 1 - Chapter One

The sunlight split up the sky, colouring the large fields in its ethereal glow, in reaction to the light, all of the sunflowers planted in that field opened up to the sun, absorbing its radiance.

The grasses flowed as the wind swept by, carrying the grassy fragrance around. Rodents crept around the fields, some picking up food and others, going about their day.

Close to the field stood a barn, painted dark red with oil paint. It stood out among the green surroundings, making it obvious to the naked eye.

A large yellow sign sat above it, the name spelt in a language far different from the average man's understanding.

Inside the barn, dried hays were stacked in rows and columns for the cattle wandering outside the barn. Beside the barn was a pen for the goats. They made their usual noises, following the sounds of the tractor that cleared the fields.

It was a beautiful day, holding memories of a beautiful experience for some. Inside the tractor was a man above the age of ninety. Even though his white hair had betrayed him, his body said the complete opposite.

Men his age would be in comas, wheelchairs or just randomly lying in bed, waiting for their time to come, but this man was different.

Despite his looks and age, he did things men his age wouldn't think of doing. Like waking up in the morning for an early jog around a large acre of field.

Managed a farm all by himself, with little to no help, and even delivered his own goods, all to save the cost of labour.

He behaved far below his age, even though his looks made it seem otherwise. It was as though the spirit didn't belong to the body, or the mind was far younger than the body.

The tractor pulled to a stop close to a ridge, and the man cleaned the beads of sweat off his forehead and temples. Wiping the trinkets of sweat that cascaded down his forehead and nose.

"Ahh, what a day!. Man it's been stressful this whole week, I've had nothing less than fifty orders of eggs, a full order of milk and 50 supplies of spices and the week hasn't even ended yet!" He complained, his voice slightly out of breath.

Sliding his feet to the exit of the tractor, he stared at the open fields. Admiring his hard work, he smiled softly to himself.

"But the gain is worth it, I've made more money this week than any other week, and that's a good thing. I can finally buy more produce, seeds, some chickens to start a poultry, and maybe build that silo I said I'll build for Jane." He smiled broadly, his mind drifting far off from his surroundings.

'I'm glad I was able to survive all these years enough to build all these. Sadly, the human life is short compared to mine. Soon, I'll leave this world and go for judgment before the supreme being.'

A deep sigh escaped his lips, his chest rising and falling from the motion. His hands drifted to the ignition starter and pulled out the keys to the tractor.

"I have to go check up on her and how she's faring with the work"

He skipped the stairs laid out for him to use and landed straight on the floor with a loud thud with dust escaping from his feet from the force.

His knees buckled below him, causing him to fall to the ground face-first He had slightly forgotten the consequences of his actions and went ahead to pressure his weak body.

'Ahh shittt! I keep forgetting, man, this is painful sometimes!.'

He held his knees, desperately trying to ease the pain anyhow he could so he could finally stand up, but his body rejected it.

With a soft push off the floor, he sat up to a sitting position, crossing his legs over each other to rest for a while.

His mind churned inside his head while he waited for his weak knees to get better so he could check up on Jane.

'If there was anything I thought would never happen, it was surviving all these years as a normal human in this forsaken world of mortals, where death is permanent and living is just as hard.'

He almost fell to the soft grass laying below him when his mind snapped him back to reality and the world around him.

His knees slowly began to feel better, though the pain still stung deeply.

"Remind me next time not to try that again." He whispered to himself, pushing himself off the floor.

He rose to his feet, his knees still slightly aching him but he ignored the pain and walked straight toward the small stable at the end of the field.

The breeze blew softly behind him as he walked, the grasses swaying in response. The cinematic view was breathtaking, but for someone who had seen it every day of his life, it was totally normal.

He arrived at the stable, and he noticed the doors were open and the horses were moving about outside the stable.

'Huh, is it time for them to come out yet?'

He stepped through the doors, carefully avoiding the areas where the horses lay their dung while moving deeper into the stable until he met a while flowing garment sticking out of one of the inner stable doors.

He followed and opened the door to meet Jane caressing one of the horses. It was brown in colour shade, with a bit of a white mark around its eyes. It was her favourite horse, therefore she spent more time with it than any other in the stable.

"Jane, there you are!" The words escaped his lips in a low voice, drawing her attention from the horse.

She turned briefly toward him, her blue eyes glinting softly before she opened her mouth to speak.

"Herald, what brings you around the stable today?" Her voice low and firm.

"As promised, I came to see how you were faring today." He responded back quickly, staring between the horse and her with another question stirring in his mind.

Before the words could slip out of his tongue, a loud explosion vibrated the whole stable. The wooden frame shook with terrible force, the horses scattered around out of fear.

Herald could feel his heart thudding loudly inside his chest. He held unto Jane who felt the same fear from the shock.

"What the hell was that?!," his voice came out strong, glancing at Jane to make sure she was safe.

"Are you alright?!"

Holding his hand firmly, she took deep breaths before answering his question.

"Yeah, I'm fine now, I think." She said, trying to sound reassuring.

"Come on, let's go check the reason for this commotion"

He held her shoulders and slowly pulled her up until she stood straight. Jane wasn't as old as he was, probably in her seventies or thereabout and her body definitely didn't betray her beauty at all.

Even while being that old, there were no visible wrinkles on her face yet. What she used to prevent it? Herald knew little about it, only that she was almost as beautiful as she was when she was younger.

Her frame remained the same, slender with a slight hour glass figure. She shrunk a bit, though her height was still imposing to the average female.

When Jane could stand properly without support, Herald held her hand tightly and guided her out of the stable to the open fields.

Their eyes met with a catastrophe far greater than they imagined.
