Aldric's jaw tightened the moment he caught the way Xander was staring at Amelia. That calm, unreadable gaze lingered on her far too long. His eyes darkened, and without realizing it, he tightened his grip on her hand.
He tugged her gently, meaning to lead her to the opposite couch but she didn't move.
Amelia stood completely frozen, eyes locked on Xander as if she had seen a ghost. Her breath hitched, lips parting slightly.
What is wrong with me? she panicked. Does he… know Aldric?
Aldric's frown deepened. Something was clearly wrong.
"Amelia" he called quietly.
Nothing. She didn't blink.
He touched her shoulder gently.
Amelia flinched, actually shivered then slowly looked up at him. She forced a tiny smile. "Yes?"
Aldric studied her emerald eyes, every tiny twitch of her expression. She was afraid. He could feel it.
He wrapped an arm around her shoulders, pulling her close as he guided her to the couch. She leaned into him instinctively, like she needed the warmth.
