Chapter 24 - Chapter 121 Nobody Knows (19)

laboratory.

Ren Yifei tried to pry open the metal ring around his neck with both hands, but the harder he tried, the stronger the electric current became. Electric shock marks appeared on the skin of his neck, and there was a burning smell.

I don't know what this thing is made of; I can't feel any obvious seams on the outside. I can feel a few small round bumps on the part that touches the skin, which is where it releases an electric current.

Unable to break free no matter what, he lowered his hand, gave up on removing the metal ring, and began to observe the opaque glass wall in front of him, tentatively hitting the glass.

He briefly lost consciousness due to the effects of anesthesia, and when he woke up, he was here, in a square glass room, less than one square meter in size.

From Ren Yifei's perspective, the glass appeared opaque, but since he wasn't the real Scarlet Witch, he naturally knew it was a one-way mirror, the one used to imprison Experiment Number Seven.

This must be the laboratory.

There must be many people standing outside right now, observing him like lab rats. He heard some voices discussing the experimental arrangements, but they were very quiet; perhaps the room was soundproofed.

To prevent him from escaping, they also put a metal ring around his neck. Any resistance he made would generate an electric current.

After his initial probing, Ren Yifei could roughly conclude that the electric current wasn't fatal to the Scarlet Witch's constitution. It was more for controlling her than for killing her.

It's very bright here, bright enough for a monster that's afraid of light.

The light was very unfriendly to the monster. Although it didn't have the strong ultraviolet rays of sunlight, it still made him feel very uncomfortable.

The psychological discomfort and his pride prevented him from falling into this state of imprisonment.

In fact, apart from a few masochists, most people and living beings do not like to be restrained.

This is the laboratory, a place he visited not long ago, a place Scarlet Witch once knew well and where she had many terrible memories. Scarlet Witch would instinctively resist and reject it.

Ren Yifei pounded on the glass door more and more violently.

He couldn't help but wonder if this was the place where that monster had died. He had watched him die with his own eyes, and an indescribable sorrow welled up in his heart, which immediately turned into anger.

"After realizing he had entered glass room number one, he showed extremely strong resistance, which means he has a vivid memory of it." The researcher observed him while taking notes.

"His self-healing ability seems to have improved; his skin recovers quickly after the electric shock. Arrange a toxin test; I'm very curious about his current physical condition after two years."

"It's best not to, that's the order from above. We need to move him to another location tonight. This is the last one, and we can't afford any damage," a researcher interjected.

Things are different now than before. There's only this one little monster, so we can't just use it for experiments.

"What a pity," the researcher said with great regret.

The researchers in the lab were all 'old friends' of the Scarlet Witch. They had been deeply saddened that their best experimental subject had escaped when the Scarlet Witch disappeared two years ago.

Other experimental subjects, even the toughest monsters, were not as durable.

None of them possess the Scarlet Witch's powerful regenerative abilities. No matter how severe the injury, it will fully heal in at most half a month.

Is there a better experimental subject than this? He was born to dedicate himself to science.

Now that the Scarlet Witch is back, this group is the happiest.

Unfortunately, they were also warned: "This is the last one. We can't act as recklessly as before. If something goes wrong here, the base will be in trouble."

"So our new human experiments will stop?" The researcher looked at the little monster inside with fascination. "Human genes, monster identity, is just a mistaken combination by the gods."

"On his body lies the key to the fusion of monster and human that we are looking for."

After an unknown amount of time, the Scarlet Witch seemed to calm down. She rested her hands on the glass, her eyes peering through the opaque membrane as if she were looking at something.

He stood very close, his stunningly beautiful face completely exposed to everyone.

"His eyes are captivating, pure, and clear, like an animal's," one researcher exclaimed.

A dog's eyes are warm and bright, while a cat's eyes are cold and deep. Animals, devoid of the complex emotions of humans, can also express the purity of their souls in their eyes. The Scarlet Witch's eyes are no exception.

His companion scoffed, "If you think of him as a harmless animal, you're in trouble. He's a monster through and through, every muscle in his body is made for hunting."

"Do you remember what happened to the last researcher who was fooled by the little monster? Be careful not to be fooled by this kind of thing. Always remember, this is an anomaly, an anomaly that is shrinking our living space!"

The researcher seemed to have a deep-seated hatred for the monster. He sneered, "If you don't believe me, I'll demonstrate it to you."

As he spoke, he pressed a button, and the originally one-way mirror gradually became clear, turning into a completely transparent mirror.

Ren Yifei saw outside and the researchers in white coats.

This is indeed a laboratory; there are identical glass rooms on both sides, but they are completely empty.

The laboratory looked very clean; the corpses and bloodstains from yesterday had been thoroughly cleaned up. However, Ren Yifei's face still stiffened little by little, and then he showed strong resistance.

"Do you remember me? Perhaps you remember it too?" The researcher took out a small jar of silver reagent, a special medicine for the Scarlet Witch.

Ren Yifei recognized it at a glance; it was the drug that had been tested on the young Scarlet Witch years ago, which had once caused her death.

"Ah!" He smashed the glass and acted aggressively towards the people in white coats outside.

"Look, do you think this kind of creature can communicate? No!" The researcher walked over and pointed at Ren Yifei, facing his colleague. "A monster is a monster. Even if you give it a hundred years, it can't evolve into a human."

"Parrots can mimic human speech, gorillas can use tools, and dogs can be trained as companion animals, but they are all just animals. Monsters too... What's wrong with you all?"

The other researchers stared at his back. The researcher belatedly realized what was happening and turned around. He saw the little monster in his mouth bite its finger and draw an X on the glass. Its eyes were coldly staring at him with an undeniable hostility.

"Do you think animals would do that?" the researcher's colleagues asked. "Monsters are different from animals, so we're here to look for the possibility of humans and monsters combining."

"Hate is not a high-level emotion; morality, reason, and aesthetics are," the researcher insisted.

He looked at his colleagues and said, "I urge you to recognize that a monster can only be a monster. I don't want another bizarre species to fall in love with a monster in the lab. That would be a disgrace to the scientific community."

Outside the laboratory lies humanity's underground city.

While the authorities were busy arresting the Scarlet Witch, a massive demonstration was taking place in the dungeon. The spark Saman had planted would ignite fear in the base's leadership within two days.

It is also because they have laid too many pitfalls in the past that problems such as class stratification and class oppression in the underground city have finally erupted today.

Although civilians have few useful weapons due to arms control issues, when they stand up and unite, they become a force that makes people tremble.

A tall, leggy man wearing a hat was mixed in with the crowd, silently following the group, but holding a small flag that read "All men are created equal." This was Samantha, one of the organizers of the march.

On his third day, Saman had already infiltrated the group. As an intermediary, he had contacted several anti-Al-Qaeda factions, preparing to launch a joint attack on the official leadership that day. However, he hadn't expected so many people to join.

The base only has tens of thousands of people, but there are already one or two thousand here.

This number isn't large, but walking in the line still gives you a feeling of being propelled by the tide of history.

What Saman provided was, frankly speaking, a record of the extravagant lifestyle of the powerful and wealthy, but the gap between the rich and poor in the underground city was so vast that even if it were true, it would be unacceptable.

Everyone dies eventually. Rather than prolonging one's life in vain, it is better to fight with all one's might. Even if one does not enjoy the benefits, one's descendants can at least receive some justice.

A life burning for one's beliefs is like a flame—truly beautiful.

"There are people actually carrying out a class revolution?" The handsome player already knew about the news outside. There was nothing he could do; this matter had become quite a big deal.

He's currently at the young lady's house; the base leader isn't there.

The base leader hadn't been home for several days because of the Scarlet Witch incident, and he told his daughter that he would be staying in the office for the next two days. So his daughter invited the handsome player to their home.

The handsome player 'inadvertently' revealed that he had gotten into a little trouble at the hotel. Someone was targeting him because he was standing with the young lady, and even left him with nowhere to go.

Feeling responsible for the incident, the young lady immediately took him in: "It's all my fault, I'm sorry to have troubled you."

But the handsome player's target wasn't the young lady; he entered the room of her mother, who was said to have died two years ago, where some of her belongings hadn't been disposed of.

There were no private items like diaries, nor anything that the handsome player was looking for.

The room was very clean, in every sense of the word.

So he went to the base leader's room. The man, having lost his partner, lived a life as chaotic as his room, things scattered haphazardly. However, the floor and furnishings were spotless; this room wasn't off-limits for cleaning.

"His wife passed away two years ago, and he found another place to live afterward. He was escaping, filled with guilt, yet stubbornly clinging to his old ways... Where would such a cowardly man keep his secrets?"

Naturally, place it in a place where no one else can see or touch it; the base leader's office is a good place to look.

After searching around, the handsome player found what he was looking for in a hidden compartment of the safe—the New Human Project and a diary.

It seems these people considered combining humans and monsters to create a new kind of human that could survive in this world.

Back in his room, the handsome player turned on the light and began flipping through the diary page by page.

The diary, which had been sitting for over ten years, showed no other signs of age except for being slightly yellowed. The handsome player examined it closely, the warm light illuminating his cold, disdainful lips.

"For the future of humanity, and for the continuation of humanity, I made this decision—to initiate the New Human Project. Millions of years from now, I may be considered a sinner for initiating this project. However, the thought that humanity will still exist millions of years from now makes me genuinely happy at the moment I made this decision."

"I would give my flesh and blood if I wanted to bring displaced people back to their homes and to bring peace to the hearts of those who are anxious and helpless."

The base leader left behind a page of his inner monologue, recounting the difficult decision he had made.

They accidentally discovered nine special pieces of paper. When human blood is combined with the paper, that human will transform into a unique monster. They possess human genes, and their bodies naturally emit an odor that can mask any other monster.

Combining it with the human body might create the legendary new human.

Six people, nine pieces of paper. One person ran away with one piece of paper, and another person smeared his blood on the paper, but the transformation failed. The remaining four people formed this base.

Later, two of them died due to some political setbacks, and the base became the private property of the base leader and the hunting captain.

They began creating special monsters, and these people selected suitable children to be transformed, with a success rate of only one-third, and the younger the child, the higher the transformation rate.

There are not many children in the shelter to begin with, and each one is cherished by their parents, so very few children are abandoned.

It wasn't until the third year that all eight monsters were gathered.

The smallest one was number eight, and it was sent to the laboratory while the umbilical cord was still attached to its belly.

That same year, almost simultaneously, the base leader's youngest son died. The base leader shed two tears in his diary, feeling extremely depressed and believing it was his responsibility.

The handsome player looked at the confession above and suddenly laughed.

He found the ghost's true form.
