The moment Warren bounds upstairs announcing his plans to build with Lego blocks, the atmosphere in the room transforms. What had been casual family energy instantly becomes something heavier, more charged. I can practically taste the tension.
Karl positions himself near the large window, his muscular arms crossed defensively over his broad chest. Philip settles at the kitchen island where documents are scattered across the granite surface. Sean braces himself against the counter, his strong jaw clenched tight. Ajax moves restlessly, unable to stay still.
My stomach clenches with dread. "Alright," I say carefully, scanning each of their faces. "What's happening?"
They exchange those infuriating glances again, the kind of wordless communication that makes me want to scream. I despise when they pull this routine, carefully measuring what information I deserve, what emotional burden I can supposedly handle.
