Sally's POV
The woman's cabin sits in the heart of the temporary settlement. It's larger than I imagined, with flowering vines crawling up the walls in bright splashes of color. She waits for us on the front porch, like she knew we were coming. Someone must have told her mate to expect visitors.
Her warm brown eyes find mine, and they light up immediately.
"You must be Sally," she says, rising from her chair.
I manage a weak nod, my stomach churning for reasons I can't explain. She's human like me, so being around her should feel natural. Instead, something feels off. She looks to be in her early thirties, with golden brown skin and dark hair woven into a thick braid that drapes over one shoulder. Her jeans and fitted blouse show off her curves perfectly.
Ajax's hand presses harder against my lower back, urging me forward.
